In the surgical department, the surgical technologist plays a vital role in assisting with patient care and surgical services under the direct oversight of registered nurses and physicians/surgeons.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
2. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
3. Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program is necessary.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE:
1. A minimum of one year of experience in surgical technology is preferred.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities outlined below are intended to describe the general nature of the work performed by individuals in this role. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities, and additional tasks may be assigned as needed.
1. Prepare for scheduled surgical cases by gathering necessary supplies and instruments.
2. Assist in the safe transportation of patients to the operating room and ensure proper positioning on the operating table.
3. Adhere to national patient safety standards by verifying the accuracy of the surgical site and the procedure to be performed.
4. Follow proper surgical scrubbing techniques, including the correct donning of sterile gloves and gowns; assist in gowning and gloving surgeons and other personnel.
5. Aid in the accounting process for instruments, sharps, sponges, and other materials used during surgical procedures.
6. Identify, prepare, and accurately pass surgical instruments and sharps to the surgeon.
7. Assist in the cleanup of the operating room, including the proper transport of instruments, disposal of waste and linens, and restocking of supplies.
8. Maintain familiarity with and adhere to infection control policies and procedures.
ASSISTANCE WITH ENDOSCOPIC PROCEDURES:
1. Provide support to the surgeon/physician during endoscopic procedures, including patient positioning, gloving, and cleaning/disinfecting of endoscopes, while utilizing personal protective equipment.
2. Assist in the decontamination of surgical instruments.
3. Monitor the functionality of the autoclave for the sterilization of instruments.
4. Ensure patient privacy is safeguarded and confidentiality is maintained.
5. Stock LDR/Triage Rooms as needed.
6. Conduct daily/Q Shift checks.
7. Assist RN/Physician as required.
8. Obtain vital signs as needed.
9. Help with the preparation of chart packets, cleaning, and waste disposal.
