Position Overview:
The Research Scientist will engage in advanced research initiatives under the guidance of a principal investigator, emphasizing the development of competencies necessary for transitioning from supervised research to independent scholarly work.


Key Research Areas:
The focus of research will encompass:

  • Creation and execution of ontological frameworks for cancer treatment.
  • Approaches to knowledge representation.
  • Innovative strategies to enhance the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR) of clinical data from various sources, including electronic health records and laboratory data.
  • Integration of diverse data types (e.g., imaging, genetic, socioeconomic) to identify vulnerable cancer populations and address health disparities.
  • Development of computational and biomedical methodologies, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, to support early detection and management of cancer therapy-related side effects.
  • Establishment and validation of reinforcement learning techniques for managing acute pain during and post-radiotherapy, aiming to reduce opioid dependency.
  • Creation of robust data analysis algorithms to investigate causal mechanisms in head and neck cancer progression.
  • Optimization of clinical practices for precision dental care through ML/AI methodologies.
  • Computational modeling for treatment planning and evaluation of outcomes in head and neck cancer therapies.

Mentorship and Collaboration:
The Research Scientist will also play a pivotal role in mentoring junior team members and facilitating collaborative efforts between the research group, clinical personnel, and visiting researchers.


Learning Objectives:
1. Conduct analyses and develop algorithms and software to address clinical and scientific challenges.
2. Engage in projects that may involve dosimetric analyses, machine learning, toxicity assessments, ontology development, and clinical data evaluations.
3. Acquire expertise in clinical informatics, focusing on advanced methods for preparing data for machine learning and ontological systems.
4. Train and supervise research staff on methodologies and equipment usage.
5. Standardize database records and terminology to enhance semantic interoperability.
6. Collect, analyze, and visualize data using appropriate software tools, maintaining thorough records in both digital and lab notebooks.
7. Contribute to the writing of scientific manuscripts for publication, grant proposals, and presentations at academic conferences.
8. Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.


Eligibility Criteria:
Required Education:
PhD in Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Computational Biology, or a related discipline.

Required Experience:
A minimum of three years of experience in data/computer science applications, including machine learning modeling, data curation, and ETL pipeline development. Candidates with a master's degree must have at least one year of experience. No prior experience is required for PhD holders.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with reinforcement learning techniques, handling clinical and multidimensional datasets, and expertise in electronic health record data extraction and biomedical informatics is highly desirable. Familiarity with natural language processing is also advantageous.
