Position Overview

The Universities Space Research Association's Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) is seeking applications for one or more full-time staff scientists specializing in planetary science. We are looking for mid-career, self-driven researchers with a proven track record of exceptional research and a history of securing external funding. Early career scientists with comparable research accomplishments and successful grant applications will also be considered.

Research Focus

The ideal candidate will enhance our capabilities in astromaterials research, particularly in the petrology and geochemistry of planetary materials, including both extraterrestrial samples and terrestrial analogs. A strong collaborative relationship with the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Division at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) is essential, and prior collaborative projects with ARES researchers are advantageous.

Facilities and Collaboration

The successful applicant will have access to LPI's state-of-the-art analytical facilities and will be able to coordinate access to ARES' advanced analytical tools (e.g., SEM, EMP, LA-ICP-MS) and experimental laboratories (e.g., high P-T petrology, hydrothermal, impact). Opportunities for collaboration with a diverse team of scientists at LPI, ARES, and nearby academic institutions will be available.

Qualifications

The candidate must possess a Ph.D. in Planetary Sciences, Geosciences (such as Geology or Geochemistry), Astrobiology, Astronomy, Physics, or related fields, ideally with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. U.S. Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency is required, along with the ability to pass a comprehensive government background check.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Design and execute innovative research in planetary science.
  • Secure and manage external funding for research initiatives.
  • Mentor post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate interns.
  • Engage with spacecraft missions and contribute to NASA and the broader scientific community.
  • Participate in review panels, analysis, and advisory groups.
Community Engagement

As part of the role, the LPI staff scientist will support NASA and the planetary science community through various activities, including:

  • Developing and implementing extensive, multi-year research programs.
  • Managing LPI's analytical equipment.
  • Contributing to summer intern programs and collaborating with visiting scientists.
  • Facilitating workshops and conferences on planetary science topics.
  • Participating in public outreach and engagement initiatives.
