Previous or ongoing collaborative efforts with ARES researchers will be advantageous.
Facilities and CollaborationAt LPI, the selected candidate will have access to advanced analytical facilities and will be able to coordinate access to ARES' analytical tools, such as SEM, EMP, and LA-ICP-MS, along with experimental laboratories for high-pressure and temperature petrology, hydrothermal studies, and impact research. The LPI Science Staff comprises experts in various planetary science domains and is actively involved in NASA's Support for Planetary Sample Science team, which focuses on training in astromaterials sample handling and research.
QualificationsThe successful candidate must possess a Ph.D. in Planetary Sciences, Geosciences (e.g., Geology, Geochemistry), Astrobiology, Astronomy, Physics, or related fields, ideally with a minimum of 10 years of scientific experience. U.S. Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency is required, along with the ability to pass a comprehensive government background check.
ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be expected to:
- Design and execute innovative research in planetary science.
- Secure and manage external funding for research initiatives.
- Mentor post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate interns.
- Engage with spacecraft missions and contribute to NASA and the broader scientific community through review panels and advisory groups.
- Manage diverse scientific personnel effectively.
As part of the role, the LPI staff scientist will support NASA and the planetary science community through various activities, including:
- Developing and implementing extensive, multi-year scientific research programs.
- Overseeing the maintenance and operation of LPI's SEM and spectrometers.
- Participating in summer intern programs and collaborating with visiting scientists on NASA-funded projects.
- Supporting workshops and conferences on planetary science topics.
- Engaging in public outreach and educational activities.
For more information about the position, please refer to the official application portal. All candidates must submit a cover letter detailing their qualifications, a curriculum vitae including a list of publications and research funding history, a two- to three-page statement of research interests and plans, and a list of at least three professional references.
