Houston, Texas, United States Universities Space Research Association Full time
Position Overview

The Universities Space Research Association's Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) is seeking applications for one or more full-time staff scientists specializing in planetary science. We are looking for mid-career, self-driven researchers with a proven track record of exceptional scientific contributions and successful external funding acquisition. We also welcome applications from early career scientists who demonstrate similar research accomplishments and a history of securing research grants.

Research Focus

The successful candidate will enhance our capabilities in astromaterials research, particularly in the petrology and geochemistry of planetary materials, which includes both extraterrestrial samples and terrestrial analogs. A strong collaborative relationship with the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Division at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) is essential, and prior collaborative projects with ARES researchers will be advantageous.

Facilities and Collaboration

As part of the LPI, the selected candidate will have access to advanced analytical facilities and will be able to coordinate access to ARES' laboratories, which include SEM, EMP, and LA-ICP-MS, as well as experimental setups for high-pressure and high-temperature petrology, hydrothermal studies, and impact research. The LPI promotes a collaborative environment, allowing interactions with a diverse group of scientists, including those from ARES and nearby academic institutions.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Planetary Sciences, Geosciences (e.g., Geology, Geochemistry), Astrobiology, Astronomy, Physics, or a related field, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. Candidates must be U.S. Citizens or Legal Permanent Residents and should be able to pass a comprehensive government background check.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Design and execute innovative research in planetary science.
  • Secure and manage external funding for research initiatives.
  • Mentor post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate interns.
  • Engage with spacecraft missions and contribute to NASA and the broader scientific community through review panels and advisory groups.
  • Manage diverse scientific personnel effectively.
Community Engagement

Part of the role includes supporting NASA and the planetary science community through various activities, such as:

  • Developing and implementing extensive, multi-year research programs.
  • Maintaining and managing the LPI's analytical instruments.
  • Participating in educational programs and workshops.
  • Collaborating with visiting scientists on NASA-funded projects.
  • Engaging in public outreach and educational initiatives.

For further details regarding this position, please refer to the application process outlined by the Universities Space Research Association. All applicants are required to submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, and a list of professional references. The LPI is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.
