Overview

The Cyclotron-Support Engineer I is responsible for the safe and routine management, upkeep, and repair of one or more particle accelerators within SOFIE's PET radiopharmacy, which produces PET diagnostics in compliance with 21 CFR 212 standards.

This role also involves first-line troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of manufacturing-related equipment, including manipulator arms, lead-shielded hot cells, radiosynthesizers, and more.

The individual must possess the ability to make independent decisions in most cyclotron and facility scenarios and will be tasked with addressing non-routine manufacturing issues.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate the cyclotron(s) following established operating procedures as required by the manufacturing schedule (may include night and weekend shifts).

• Conduct routine, non-routine, scheduled, and emergency maintenance on the cyclotron(s).

• Complete documentation associated with cyclotron operations per work instructions, including preventative maintenance, repairs, and audit logs.

• Plan and carry out accelerator maintenance activities as scheduled by the Technical Services management team.

• Diagnose and repair the following systems:
- Electronic equipment
- Electro-pneumatic systems
- High vacuum systems
- Deionized chilled water systems
- High voltage systems
- Target systems
- High-power RF systems

• Provide timely updates to supervisors regarding equipment performance and status.

• As the first line of support, maintain and repair all PET manufacturing equipment at the facility, including lead-shielded hot cells, manipulator arms, and radiosynthesizers.

• Collaborate with the Facility Manager to oversee the work of third-party contractors on manufacturing-related equipment.

• Perform radiation safety duties in accordance with SOFIE's Radiation Compliance/Environmental Health and Safety Program to ensure adherence to all regulations under the Corporate and site RSO.

• Ensure compliance with all procedures and regulations under the Quality Assurance program, including participation in exception document reporting (e.g., deviations, corrective and preventative action plans, out-of-specifications, etc.).

• Provide technical training and support to fellow employees.

• Offer after-hours on-call support to the site as necessary.

• Submit all work tickets, time cards, and expense reports promptly.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of cyclotron experience or an Associate Degree in a Technical Discipline required.

• Proficient understanding of digital and analog circuitry required.

• Ability to troubleshoot electronics down to the component level preferred.

• Familiarity with the detailed theory of operation for most accelerator systems preferred.

• Capability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics required.

• Knowledge of radiation survey meters required.

• Experience in diagnosing and repairing equipment failures required.

• High voltage training experience preferred.

• Understanding of basic cGMP practices and procedures preferred.

• Strong problem-solving skills, including data collection, fact establishment, and valid conclusion drawing required.

• Experience working with radioactive materials required.

• Physical ability to climb ladders and stairs, work in protective clothing, operate in confined spaces (i.e., inside or underneath the cyclotron), and lift a minimum of 50 lbs. required.

• Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation required.

• Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and reliability required.

• Proficient in Microsoft Suite required.

• Willingness to travel up to 20%.
