General Description: Design and implement product improvement, cost reduction, new product development and product issue resolution efforts for architecturally driven door hardware.   Maintain engineering documentation relative to a product and administer changes to the documentation.  Develop detailed knowledge of the product line, understand sister companies’ product as well as competition and administer technical support to customers and sales force as required.

Requirements:

  • BSME or equivalent
  • Proficient in 2D and 3D CAD, AutoCAD and SolidWorks preferred
  • Understanding of mechanical systems with an understanding of fits, clearances and tolerances
  • Familiarity with part fabrication and assembly techniques including machining, shearing, punching, bending, welding, fastening, and plating
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and PC Skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in fast paced, team-based work environment
  • Requires occasional travel
  • Hands on
  • 2-3 year’s experience a plus
  • Knowledge of architectural hardware and or glass entry systems a plus

Responsibilities:

  • Development and management of project timelines.
  • Liaison with marketing, supply chain, sales, manufacturing, engineering (across ASSA ABLOY sites) and planning representatives and other relevant parties to ensure that projects proceed on schedule.
  • Assisting in Daily Drafting duties which includes creating production and customer approval drawings
  • Preparation of solid models of designs with supporting calculations and specifications, and supply drafting and engineering staff with such information to assist in the production of the product designed. Production of detailed drawings and, if applicable, the development of tools, quantities, materials list and cost estimates as required.
  • Initiate and complete Engineering change orders.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the product data management system.
  • Design test plans, perform root cause analysis, interpret data and provide technical support to the test lab.
  • Check designs, materials purchased and components for conformity with specifications.  Ensure test programs for total product conformation are thoroughly conducted and appraised.
  • The preparation of technical details for sales inquiries, marketing, quotations, contract documentation, technical literature, or in the analysis of failures following customer complaints.
  • Assist in managing the entire product category life cycle including continuous analysis of portfolio performance and recommend appropriate actions including cost reduction through outsourcing or VA/VE, rationalization, etc.  Generate new product, product improvement and cost reduction ideas based on customer and company needs.
  • Work closely with profit center teams on product quality improvements
  • Visit customer and job sites to learn end users and other customer’s needs and also help to resolve product problems when needed.
  • Become an expert on product line related BHMA and UL standards and provide technical support to the product team and test lab.
