Overview

The Cyclotron-Support Engineer I is responsible for the safe and routine operation, upkeep, and repair of one or more particle accelerators within SOFIE's PET radiopharmacy, which produces PET diagnostics in compliance with 21 CFR 212 standards.

This role includes first-line troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of manufacturing equipment, such as manipulator arms, lead-shielded hot cells, and radiosynthesizers.

The individual in this position should possess independent decision-making capabilities for most cyclotron and facility-related scenarios and will be tasked with addressing non-routine manufacturing issues.


Key Responsibilities
  • Operate the cyclotron(s) following established operating procedures as per the manufacturing schedule, which may include night and weekend shifts.
  • Conduct routine, non-routine, scheduled, and emergency maintenance on the cyclotron(s).
  • Complete necessary documentation related to cyclotron operations, including preventative maintenance, repairs, and audit logs.
  • Plan and execute maintenance activities for accelerators as scheduled by the Technical Services management team.
  • Diagnose and repair various systems, including electronic equipment, electro-pneumatic systems, high vacuum systems, deionized chilled water systems, high voltage systems, and high-power RF systems.
  • Provide timely updates to supervisors regarding equipment operation and status.
  • As the first line of support, maintain and repair all PET manufacturing equipment at the facility.
  • Collaborate with the Facility Manager to oversee third-party contractors on manufacturing-related equipment.
  • Perform radiation safety duties in accordance with SOFIE's Radiation Compliance and Environmental Health and Safety Program standards.
  • Ensure adherence to all procedures and regulations under the Quality Assurance program, including participation in exception document reporting.
  • Offer technical training and support to fellow employees.
  • Provide after-hours on-call support as necessary.
  • Submit all work tickets, time cards, and expense reports promptly.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of cyclotron experience or an Associate Degree in a Technical Discipline.
  • Proficient understanding of digital and analog circuitry.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electronics down to the component level is preferred.
  • Understanding of the operational theory for most accelerator systems is preferred.
  • Capability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics.
  • Familiarity with radiation survey meters is required.
  • Experience in diagnosing and repairing equipment failures is essential.
  • High voltage training experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic cGMP practices and procedures is preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including data collection and analysis.
  • Experience working with radioactive materials is required.
  • Physical ability to climb ladders, work in protective clothing, operate in confined spaces, and lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation is required.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and reliability are essential.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20%.
