Position Summary:

The Reporters Committee is seeking a dedicated Local Legal Initiative (LLI) Attorney for Oklahoma. This role, initiated in 2020, aims to deliver pro bono legal assistance to journalists and media outlets engaged in local investigative reporting. The Oklahoma LLI Attorney will provide legal counsel and representation to journalists and news organizations in Oklahoma, focusing on matters related to access to judicial records, freedom of information, and First Amendment rights.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Represent Oklahoma-based journalists and media organizations in legal proceedings concerning access to judicial records and newsgathering rights.
  • Offer legal advice on issues such as libel, privacy, and access to information.
  • Draft and supervise amicus briefs in significant First Amendment cases.
  • Conduct training sessions for journalists on media law and First Amendment rights.
  • Respond to inquiries from journalists and collaborate with communications staff to provide insights for publication.
  • Engage with various stakeholders to enhance the visibility and impact of the Local Legal Initiative.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to legal fellows, depending on experience level.
Qualifications:
  • Must be licensed to practice law in Oklahoma or eligible for admission.
  • 3 to 10 years of experience in litigation and advising, particularly in media law.
  • Proven ability to manage litigation independently, including drafting legal documents and formulating strategies.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with experience managing junior attorneys.
  • Exceptional legal research and written communication skills.
  • Excellent public speaking and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated integrity and sound judgment.
Compensation and Benefits:

The starting salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, retirement savings plans, and employer-paid insurance coverage.
