Senior Program Director – Supportive Housing Programs

Lantern Community Services Inc. is dedicated to empowering New Yorkers affected by homelessness through innovative support services. Reports to: Assistant Vice President

Location: New York City

Position Type: Full-time, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Flexibility in schedule may be required based on operational needs.

Objective:

We are in search of a seasoned Senior Program Director to manage two supportive housing initiatives located in New York City. One program caters to single and young adults grappling with mental health challenges, disabilities, and chronic homelessness, while the other focuses on families and individuals recovering from substance abuse. The Senior Program Director will lead a dedicated team in assisting these populations to stabilize their lives, secure housing, and achieve their personal goals. Collaboration with the Leasing and Compliance Department and Property Management staff is essential.

The ideal candidate will possess a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) designation, along with proven leadership experience in supportive housing environments. Strong judgment, planning capabilities, and staff supervision skills are crucial. Experience working with formerly homeless families and individuals affected by mental health and substance use issues is required. The Senior Program Director should also demonstrate exceptional administrative skills, budget management experience, and operational knowledge.

Essential Functions:

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and mentor a program team, ensuring accountability for achieving resident outcomes and compliance with organizational and funder regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive case records for all residents, monitoring staff compliance and providing necessary training and support.
  • Oversee the development and execution of program services, including group activities, community meetings, and events tailored to tenant needs.
  • Provide ongoing supervision and facilitate regular staff and clinical meetings, offering case management support as needed.
  • Identify and address training needs for staff members.
  • Collaborate with Leasing and Compliance staff to screen potential clients and assist with program orientation.
  • Manage relationships with landlords to address property management issues and client needs.
  • Promote housing stability by guiding tenants in budgeting and financial management.
  • Assess incidents, review management practices, and implement necessary corrections.
  • Utilize data to monitor program performance and address trends effectively.
  • Engage in professional development training and identify training opportunities for program staff.
  • Prepare monthly reports for senior management as required.
  • Establish connections with community organizations and local law enforcement to enhance program support.

Required Education and Experience:

  • LMSW/LMHC or LCSW required, SIFI certification is a plus.
  • A minimum of eight years of progressive experience in supportive housing, including at least three years in a supervisory role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS, mental health, substance use, and chronic homelessness.
  • Experience managing service contracts with relevant agencies is required.
  • Proficiency in electronic case management systems and the ability to analyze data for best practices.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based models, including Motivational Interviewing and harm reduction strategies.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is a plus.

Supervisory Responsibility: Oversees Social Services Teams at both program sites, including an Assistant Program Director and case managers/social workers.

Work Environment: This role operates within a supportive housing environment, engaging with individuals facing mental health challenges, addiction, disabilities, HIV, and other chronic illnesses.

Physical Demands: The role requires regular standing, walking, sitting, and kneeling. The employee must be able to use their hands for typing and handling materials. Frequent communication is necessary, and the ability to lift up to 5 pounds may be required. Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
