Barrier Free Living
Barrier Free Living (BFL) is committed to empowering New Yorkers with disabilities to live
independently within the community. Through its diverse programs, BFL offers a wide array of residential and non-residential services to disabled survivors of domestic
violence, transitional housing for the disabled homeless, and outreach to individuals with physical
disabilities facing mental health and/or substance abuse challenges. Services
include case management; housing placements; independent living skills training;
occupational therapy; both short and long-term individual counseling; advocacy within the
medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems;
and referrals to external services.
Position Summary
The Senior Accountant is a full-time non-exempt position reporting directly to the Chief Fiscal Officer.
The finance team is tasked with overseeing the organization's financial management.
The Senior Accountant collaborates closely with the Chief Fiscal Officer, Accounts Payable Clerk, and Payroll Clerk
to ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and
laws. The Senior Accountant must be adept at engaging with external funders,
vendors, external auditors, the Executive Team, and Program Directors of the
various programs offered by Barrier Free Living.
Responsibilities
- Support the team in month-end closing processes and preparation of month-end
- Assist the CFO in the preparation, review, and analysis of budgets, forecasts, and
- Help prepare Form 990, 1099s, and other benefit, tax, and
- Monitor monthly and quarterly budget-to-actual figures and promptly share such
- Assist in entering budgets and budget modifications in funders' grant
- Assist in entering board-approved yearly budget in NetSuite
- Reconcile Accounts Receivable accounts and follow up with funders regarding any
- Prepare bi-weekly reports on vacation, sick, and personal accrual balances
- Prepare year-end vacation liability accrual reports
- Assist in organizing funders' contracts and billing documents
- Update agency employee payroll allocations spreadsheet based on
- Prepare monthly journal entries between the organization's programs
- Assist in preparing monthly bank reconciliations as needed
- Support the processing of bi-weekly payroll and prepare payroll-related reports when
- Assist the Chief Fiscal Officer with special projects related to internal and
- Safeguard the organization's value by maintaining confidentiality of all information
- Collaborate closely with Accounts Payable and Payroll staff to resolve issues and unpaid
- Assist in preparing Accounting Depreciation Schedules
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Associate's degree in business, accounting, or a related field is
- 2+ years of experience in a non-profit accounting/bookkeeping environment
- Knowledge/Proficiency in NetSuite or similar accounting software is preferred
- Strong computer and reporting skills, particularly in Microsoft and accounting
- Detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to remain calm and professional in emergency situations
- Familiarity with working with domestic violence survivors or individuals with disabilities
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively as needed
- Must provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination record
