The Communication Specialist in an educational environment is responsible for conducting student assessments and delivering therapeutic services in line with the individualized care plans established for each student and the directives from healthcare providers.


Key Responsibilities:
Evaluates students' communication abilities (e.g., articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language) to identify communication challenges, determine eligibility for programs, and formulate treatment recommendations.

Engages with various stakeholders to share information, address concerns, and deliver services in accordance with established protocols.

Facilitates meetings and processes for eligible students (e.g., assessments, Individualized Education Programs, parent meetings, pre-referral discussions) to present evaluation findings, create treatment strategies, and provide training to parents, students, and staff.

Designs treatment strategies, interventions, and educational resources aimed at reducing the negative effects of communication disorders while adhering to regulatory standards.

Teaches eligible students to utilize appropriate communication technologies (e.g., hearing aids, FM systems, augmentative communication devices).

Keeps comprehensive records (e.g., progress reports, activity logs, billing information, treatment plans, required documentation, quarterly reports, screening outcomes).

Participates in meetings, workshops, and training sessions (e.g., professional development, IEPs, team discussions).

Provides speech and language therapy to students to mitigate the impact of speech and language disorders on academic achievement.

  • Seeks relevant in-service and professional growth opportunities.
Performs additional duties as assigned or necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:
Current Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) Licensure in the state of practice is required.

Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) is preferred and may be mandated by state or contract requirements.

Adheres to all pertinent professional standards of practice.

Completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable.

Current CPR certification if applicable.

TB questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray if applicable.

Current Health certificate (as per contract or state regulations).

Must fulfill all federal, state, and local requirements.

Successful completion of new hire training as relevant to the job site.

Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.

Ability to effectively communicate information to and from relevant individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, colleagues, clients) through strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required.

Computer proficiency is necessary.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Manage a caseload of 40-45 students.
