Job Overview:


The key responsibilities of the Communication Specialist include: identifying students with speech and language challenges; devising and executing suitable interventions to reduce barriers to academic achievement, enhancing students' communication skills; proposing treatment strategies; and guiding educators and caregivers.


Core Responsibilities:
Evaluates students' communication abilities (e.g. articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language, etc.) to identify speech and language issues, assess program eligibility, and formulate treatment recommendations.

Delivers speech and language therapy to students to mitigate the negative effects of communication disorders on academic performance and to enhance overall communication proficiency.

Collaborates with various stakeholders (e.g. parents, educators, healthcare providers, administration, IEP team members, other specialists, etc.) to share information, address concerns, and ensure services comply with established guidelines and standards.
Facilitates meetings and processes for eligible students (e.g. assessments, IEPs, parent consultations, pre-referral discussions, etc.) to present evaluation findings, create treatment plans, and/or provide training to parents/students/staff.

Designs and assists in the implementation of treatment plans, interventions, and educational resources to alleviate the impact of communication disorders while adhering to regulatory standards.

Instructs eligible students and educational staff on the use of appropriate communication technologies (e.g. hearing aids, FM systems, augmentative communication devices).

Interprets medical documentation (within the professional scope of a Communication Specialist) to provide insights and ensure that treatment and intervention strategies are suitable.

Maintains comprehensive records and prepares various written materials (e.g. progress reports, activity logs, billing documentation, treatment plans, compliance documentation, screening results, etc.) to ensure information is readily available for reference and compliance, document activities, and convey essential information.
Participates in meetings, workshops, and training sessions (e.g. professional development, IEPs, team discussions, etc.) to share and gather information.

Conducts site visits at multiple locations, including home visits, to provide therapy and support as necessary.

Researches resources and methodologies (e.g. intervention techniques, assessment tools, community resources, etc.) to determine the most effective strategies for addressing students' needs.
Responds to inquiries (e.g. parents, educators, staff, students, etc.) to provide information and/or referrals as appropriate.
Serves as a role model for students in demonstrating exemplary conduct.

Additional Responsibilities:
Performs other related tasks as assigned to ensure the smooth and effective operation of the work unit.
Attends training sessions, SLP department meetings, and staff gatherings.
Occasionally transports supplies and equipment to various locations to ensure availability as needed.

Qualifications:
Education
Master's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Continuous professional development is encouraged and preferred to maintain CEUs and professional credentials in the field of speech-language pathology.

Experience
Prior experience in speech-language pathology is preferred; however, candidates completing their clinical fellowship may also apply.
Licensing
Certification as a Speech Language Pathologist through the Department of Education is required.
Annual Child Abuse Reporting Certification is mandatory before working with students.

Must be capable of utilizing assessment tools and operating specialized equipment for communication disorders.
Able to maintain accurate records.
Familiarity with relevant educational, special education, and speech/language-related regulations and policies is essential.
Able to translate therapy data into meaningful educational activities.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
This position primarily involves sitting indoors.

A minor portion of the role requires getting up and down from a seated position and walking up and down stairs daily.
