As an Educational Support Specialist, you will be stationed at a local educational institution, working closely within a K-3 classroom environment. You will collaborate with the classroom instructor to enhance student engagement and foster improved reading skills. Daily, you will engage with students individually or in small groups to provide targeted practice and skill development. With comprehensive training and on-site mentorship, you will be equipped to support students effectively. Your dedication during school hours throughout the academic year will lead to a profound impact.

This role is part of an AmeriCorps initiative under the Total Learning Classroom Initiative of Reading Corps. Become a vital part of our AmeriCorps team to empower children through literacy. Unleash your passion - step into the role of an Educational Support Specialist and make a difference.

Your Responsibilities
  • Act as a supportive adult focused on helping students enhance their skills and confidence.
  • Monitor student progress and regularly collaborate with the school's on-site coach.
  • Conduct skill evaluations and input student data into tracking software.
  • Commit to personal development as a tutor through ongoing coaching, training, and professional growth.
  • Represent Reading Corps at school functions and share your experiences with the community to raise awareness.

It Begins with a Passion

Reading Corps transforms everyday individuals into exceptional Educational Support Specialists. Anyone with a genuine desire to make a difference can become an Educational Support Specialist, provided they meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • Reliable with a proven record of good attendance.
  • Able to comprehend and follow instructions.
  • Open to constructive feedback and willing to make improvements.
  • Capable of maintaining a schedule and pacing with students.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills (such as email and online navigation).
  • Fluent in English for effective communication in speaking, reading, and writing.
  • At least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.
  • Able to successfully complete a background check.
Benefits Package

While you contribute to making a difference, you will receive a bi-weekly stipend along with additional benefits. As part of the AmeriCorps program, you will enjoy both federally provided benefits and program-specific perks.

Federal Benefits include:
  • Up to $ in Education Award
    • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award* usable for tuition or repayment of qualified student loans. Individuals aged 55 and older at the start of their service term may transfer their award to a family member.
  • Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment.
  • Accrual of time towards the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
Program-Specific Benefits based on weekly commitment:

35 Hours
  • $1150 stipend paid bi-weekly.
  • Individual health insurance with monthly premiums fully covered.
  • Child care assistance based on family size and income.
