This position involves collaborating closely with educational institutions to deliver comprehensive legal assistance, coordination, intake, referrals, and various services to students and their families.

This role is hybrid, necessitating a minimum of two in-office days each week, along with periodic visits to educational facilities for direct service delivery. Attendance may also be required for essential meetings or court appearances as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial assessments and intake for students and their families to identify their legal needs and provide suitable referrals for legal and social services.
  • Offer personalized legal consultations, which include providing Know Your Rights information, determining eligibility for relief, offering legal advice, and making targeted referrals for comprehensive representation.
  • Accompany students and their families to court as part of the Attorney of the Day program.
  • Deliver limited legal services while families await full representation, including assistance with work permit applications, asylum filings, and various motions.
  • Organize and facilitate clinics, presentations on rights, and legal orientations for students and their families.
  • Collaborate with educational staff and social workers to evaluate the legal needs of newcomer students and tailor services accordingly.
  • Create community-oriented materials to help families navigate the immigration process.
  • Provide full representation for a select number of students and their families in immigration court and before USCIS.
  • Represent eligible students in California Superior Court for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status cases.
  • Maintain accurate records in the case management system to meet reporting requirements.
  • Supervise two Legal Services Coordinators, including training new staff on application preparation and filing.
  • Recruit, train, and support pro bono volunteers.
  • Engage in additional programmatic activities to support the ILDP and JDC.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Travel to educational facilities to provide on-site services.
  • Represent JDC in community settings and collaborate with partners to identify and develop resources for students and their families.
  • Participate in the Rapid Response Network as an on-call attorney.

Work Environment:

Responsibilities will be carried out in a professional office setting during standard business hours, with occasional travel to various educational institutions for service delivery. The position involves significant telephone and computer use.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Valid California license to practice law.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years practicing immigration law, particularly in removal proceedings.
  • Familiarity with Asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, TPS, and DACA.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience.

Required Skills:

  • Fluency in English and Spanish, with proficiency in additional languages being a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a culturally competent manner.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and familiar with Google Workspace.
