Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Laser Physicist with extensive knowledge in nonlinear optics to spearhead the research, development, and implementation of cutting-edge laser technologies. This role focuses on pioneering laser systems and advancing the capabilities of the National Ignition Facility (NIF), which has achieved significant milestones in controlled laser fusion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead interdisciplinary teams in the research, design, and deployment of high-energy laser systems, integrating new technologies and physics models to meet evolving mission objectives.
  • Design and analyze chi-2 based nonlinear optical devices for frequency conversion and optical parametric amplification, including specifications for crystal cut angles and thermal loading mitigation.
  • Conduct experimental testing of nonlinear optical devices, applying system engineering principles.
  • Develop complex theoretical and numerical models to validate experimental results, collaborating with laboratory scientists and engineers.
  • Provide strategic recommendations to leadership regarding project vision and technical direction.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations and publications for diverse audiences.
  • Advise senior management on advanced technical strategies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities for Senior Level

  • Utilize advanced expertise to oversee the development and enhancement of sophisticated laser systems, often involving undefined elements and uncertainties.
  • Apply subject matter expertise in nonlinear optics to guide future program developments.
  • Lead design optimization studies for laser systems incorporating nonlinear optical components.
  • Oversee the specification and qualification of nonlinear optical devices and systems.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Laser Physics, Applied Physics, Optics, or a related discipline, with demonstrated expertise in chi-2 nonlinear optics and high average power laser technology.
  • Extensive experience in analytical and numerical modeling, essential for leading scientific and technical projects.
  • Proven track record in nonlinear optical device physics modeling and component engineering.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities within a team environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for effective interaction with senior management.
