Advanced Welding and Fabrication Specialist

Amentum is in search of a dedicated Welding and Fabrication Specialist to enhance our maintenance division.

  • Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM; flexibility may be required based on operational needs.
  • Availability for after-hours support as instructed by management.
This role entails serving as a key authority in welding and fabrication processes, including working with steel, PVC, basic carpentry, and aluminum, as well as occasional use of specialized materials. You will collaborate with engineering teams to create modeling fixtures and ensure compliance with safety standards and certifications. Responsibilities include working closely with supervisors, technicians, and engineers.
  • Interpreting blueprints and technical documents.
  • Collaborating with engineering teams to suggest design enhancements.
  • Providing mentorship and training to junior technicians as necessary.
  • Communicating effectively with site management and clients to clarify requirements, resolve complex design issues, and address manufacturing challenges.
  • Identifying and rectifying safety concerns while conducting independent evaluations of equipment to preempt potential failures.
  • Conducting regular inspections of fabrication machinery as needed.
  • Assisting in the upkeep of mechanical systems such as pumps and hydraulic/pneumatic configurations.
  • Supporting maintenance and troubleshooting of fabrication tools including drill presses, shears, and welders.
  • Executing preventative maintenance tasks on various equipment as directed.
  • Guiding less experienced maintenance personnel.
  • Exhibiting self-motivation and strong organizational/time management skills essential for success in this position.

  • Assisting maintenance teams in the workshop as required.
  • Understanding technical drawings and building components from scratch.
  • Providing expertise in metalworking for engineering initiatives.
  • Contributing to the design of specialized tooling.
  • Demonstrating effective communication skills.
  • Occasional woodworking and carpentry for unique projects.
  • Managing procurement of parts from inventory systems or authorized suppliers.
  • Documenting and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Engaging in continuous improvement practices.
  • Determining appropriate welding techniques and configurations.
  • Fabricating weight-bearing structures and components for rigging applications.
  • Utilizing measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Calculating material weights, thicknesses, and properties.
  • Assisting in material procurement.
  • Providing insights on material strengths and engineering methods.
  • Occasionally liaising with suppliers and clients to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Assisting with load testing and fitment evaluations.
  • Using forklifts and other material handling equipment.
  • Solving complex geometrical problems to ensure accurate product construction.
  • Employing various welding techniques, including TIG, MIG, and Stick welding.
  • Understanding welding materials and their specifications.
  • Adjusting welder settings for optimal performance.
  • Executing structural welds on materials of varying thicknesses.
  • Constructing fixtures and vessels from stainless steel.
  • Performing pipe welding for low to medium pressure applications.
  • Participating in root cause analysis with maintenance teams.
  • Working with sensitive materials that require careful handling.
  • Aligning various components accurately.
  • Familiarizing with hot work protocols and safety procedures.
  • Understanding safety data sheets for chemicals used in the workplace.
  • Adhering to lockout/tagout procedures and wearing required personal protective equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of six years of experience in welding, machining, or fabrication, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Certification in structural welding or equivalent qualifications.
Additional Information:
  • Applicants selected for this position must successfully complete a pre-employment substance abuse screening.
  • A valid driver's license may be required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain facility access credentials is necessary.
  • Security clearance may be required for this role.
  • This position may involve various shifts and weekend work.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Capability to climb ladders and stairs multiple times during a shift.
  • Flexibility to bend, stoop, and squat repetitively.
  • Ability to kneel and move in confined spaces as needed.
  • Extensive walking throughout the facility during shifts.
  • Use of approved utility knives as necessary.
  • Ability to distinguish colors for wire coding.
  • Some tasks may require repetitive wrist movements.
  • Professional interaction with clients is expected, even under stress.
Special Requirements:
  • Use of steel-toed safety footwear, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and other personal protective equipment as required.
  • Ability to manage job-related stressors while maintaining performance levels.
