Job Overview:


Primary Objective:
The Specimen Management Specialist is tasked with providing essential support functions within the Technical Operations Division.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Basic data entry capabilities
  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Knowledge of specimen categories related to requested tests
  • Awareness of clinical department specifications regarding specimen types and quantities required for each test, as well as specimen handling and delivery protocols
  • Understanding of compliance regulations pertaining to test requests, which may evolve regularly
  • Adaptability and a proactive approach to continuous improvement
  • Dedication to meeting both internal and external customer expectations while performing routine responsibilities
  • Willingness to support departmental staffing needs during weekends, holidays, on-call situations, and overtime
  • Execution of tasks with precision, accuracy, and timeliness
  • Proficiency in various manual functions including:
    • Sorting
    • Racking
    • Specimen pickup and delivery
    • Specimen storage
    • Centrifugation
    • Aliquoting

Accountabilities:

  • Exhibits a capacity to learn the responsibilities assigned to the Specimen Management Specialist, gaining insight into how all functions within Technical Operations and Specimen Management interrelate and influence Technical departments and overall quality.
  • Identifies issues related to specimen types, missing information, etc., concerning sorting, racking, centrifuging, delivery, and storage; resolves or escalates information to facilitate timely problem resolution.
  • Demonstrates comprehension of compliance policies related to test requests, necessitating the ability to research test order details through translation tables, computer systems, and service directories.
  • Achieves quality and production benchmarks within a designated training period.
  • Completes all necessary documentation clearly and legibly within the specified timeframe.
  • Adheres to attendance guidelines and supports departmental performance during coworker absences.
  • Acquires additional competencies within Technical Operations and Specimen Management to enable timely advancement to higher levels.
  • Performs other assigned duties as necessary.

Work Environment and Requirements:

  • Manages multiple tasks concurrently in a production setting.
  • Communicates effectively with staff at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
  • Maintains composure under pressure.
  • Exhibits sound judgment when determining actions to resolve issues.
  • Complies with company core values, safety standards, and operational policies.
  • Works in a biohazard environment, adhering to all relevant safety regulations.
  • Keeps the workspace organized and tidy, following 5S workplace principles.
  • Capable of prolonged sitting, standing, or walking; able to lift up to 50 lbs; maneuvers large carts and/or racks containing specimens.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills that promote a positive workplace atmosphere.
  • Exhibits flexibility in work assignments and adaptability to change.
  • Possesses some flexibility regarding work schedule.
Ideal candidates should possess the following qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Preferred medical background, including familiarity with medical terminology relevant to clinical laboratories.
  • Previous experience in a production environment is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with mainframe computer systems is preferred.
