Description

The Process Engineer is responsible for providing support to the Operations, Maintenance and Technical departments to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a variety of power plant systems, including the main Power Block, the Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD), FGD Wastewater Treatment, and FGD Water Pre-Treatment Systems. The incumbent also provides support for major station processes such as boiler water chemistry/chemical cleaning, cooling tower chemistry, and main plant wastewater treatment. The incumbent supports major station programs such as availability, thermal performance, proactive maintenance, process improvement, and station modifications, along with performing troubleshooting, diagnostics, and root cause failure analysis to identify problems and recommend appropriate solutions. While this position is listed as being based at the Conemaugh Generating Station, the successful candidate will also support the Keystone Generating Station (Shelocta, PA - Armstrong County). There is some flexibility as to which location will be the base for this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) System and Supporting Equipment/Processes
  • Coordinate operational parameters and lab analyses associated with the FGD, FGD Wastewater Treatment, and FGD Water Pre-Treatment Systems to assure overall system performance optimization.
  • Work closely with FGD/Lab attendants daily in support of process optimization and in assuring all operational and environmental parameters are maintained.
  • Ensures the FGD Wastewater system is functioning at a high level of efficiency in accordance with all NPDES Permit obligations.
  • Ensures Gypsum production meets all required standards for marketability.
  • Maintains FGD Lab Procedures and performs or supports laboratory training as necessary.
Water Laboratory Support
  • Provides support to the Water Lab Operations at both stations.
  • Through the Water Lab Operators, ensures that there is a continuous supply of boiler makeup of sufficient quality.
  • Ensures that all boiler process and water treating equipment is maintained.
  • Resolves issues with boiler makeup chemistry.
  • Maintains Water Lab Procedures performs or supports laboratory training as necessary.
Environmental Coordinator Back-Up Support
  • Serves as plant Environmental Coordinator Back-Up as necessary.
  • Obtain a class B Sewage Treatment Plant License and oversee the operation of the Sewage Treatment Plants.
  • As Environmental backup ensures the Plants Wastewater Treatment systems are performing correctly and discharges meet NPDES permit obligations.
  • Acts as a back-up for the SARA, NPDES, RCRA, DOT and other Environmental Programs.
Other Plant Systems/Responsibilities
  • Support the Circulating and Service Water System chemical treatment program.
  • Interfaces with Chemical Vendors responsible for Station Chemical Programs.
  • Perform work management duties in work management systems such creating work notifications.
  • Develop and manage O & M budget requirements for areas of responsibility.
  • Actively participate in station safety and human performance improvement programs at both stations.
  • Complete tasks to support the Technical Manager in the performance of his/her responsibilities to support station goals.
Requirements
  • BS degree in Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 3 years of power plant or related industry experience
  • Strong understanding/background in chemical engineering/chemistry as related to FGD and power plant processes.
  • Willing to accept accountability for own decisions, performance, and behavior.
  • Possess good communication skills (verbal and written) in a power plant context
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with all individuals, listen carefully and understand various points of view.
  • Ability to perform in an environment either as a team member or as a team leader to achieve consensus decisions and implement and follow-up on those decisions.
  • Excellent skill level to use a personal computer and associated software applications.
  • High competency in use of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint is preferred.
Other Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Power plant environment, including working out of doors, working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas at generating unit work locations.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to access plant areas using stairs, and ladders while using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, and high noise areas.
  • Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirators and other protective equipment.
  • Emergency situations may require the use of a respirator. Established facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted.
  • OSHA approved footwear is required.
  • Valid Driver's License is required.
