Position Description:
The Linux/UNIX Systems Administrator will support the Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) at Patrick Space Force Base in Florida. This role involves managing and maintaining Linux/UNIX systems, ensuring their security, performance, and compliance with DoD standards. The position requires expertise in RedHat and Solaris systems, advanced troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work effectively within a dynamic team environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • System Administration: Manage RedHat 7.x and Solaris 10 and above, including installation, configuration, performance tuning, and maintenance.
  • Issue Resolution: Perform complex Linux-based issue resolution and root cause analysis for both on-premise and cloud-based systems.
  • Proactive Management: Conduct proactive space and growth management, high availability (HA) and scalability improvements, backup and recovery enhancements, and clustering strategies.
  • Technical Evaluation: Evaluate vendor submissions for compliance with technical specifications and assess service-level contracts for IT infrastructure.
  • Documentation and Training: Document complex procedures and installations and serve as a subject matter expert (SME) to train government help desk and support technicians.
  • Project Coordination: Lead large-scale projects such as data storage movements, physical-to-virtual (P2V) server conversions, and Solaris to RedHat migrations.
  • User and File Management: Manage users and groups, handle file and directory operations, and configure file systems and permissions.
  • Security and Compliance: Address cybersecurity compliance issues, complete STIG checklists, and maintain test plans and hardware inventory. Remediate findings and complete Plan of Action and Milestones (POAM) documentation.
  • Automation and Scripting: Utilize shell scripting (Bash, C, Korn, Python) and maintain automation tools such as Ansible and RedHat Satellite servers.
  • Containerization Support: Provide support for containerization technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, and Rancher.
  • Interoperability and Integration: Execute RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) interoperability and collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues.
  • On-Call Support: Respond to emergency on-call support within one hour, providing both telephone and on-site assistance as required.
Qualifications:
  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of experience working as a Linux/UNIX administrator.
  • Education:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Required Certifications:
    • IAT Level 2 Certification: (One of the following required: CCNA-Security, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, Security+ CE, CND, SSCP)
    • Oracle (Solaris) Certified Associate and/or Red Hat Certified System Administrator
  • Desired Certifications:
    • Oracle Solaris 11 Systems Administration I, II, III
    • Oracle Solaris 11 Logical Domains
    • Oracle Solaris 11 Zones
    • Oracle Solaris Essentials and Shell Oracle
    • Solaris 11 ZFS Administration
    • Oracle Solaris 11 Security Administration
    • Oracle Solaris 11 Performance Tuning and Management
    • Red Hat System Administration I, II, III
    • Red Hat Automation with Ansible
    • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
    • Red Hat Satellite Administration
    • Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization
    • CompTIA Linux+
  • Skills: Proficiency in Linux/UNIX systems, scripting languages, and automation tools. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Security Clearance: Must possess a Top Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain SCI.
Work Environment:
The Linux/UNIX Systems Administrator will be primarily based at Patrick SFB in Florida, working within a secured government facility. The role requires strict adherence to security protocols and may involve periodic on-call support to address mission-critical IT system issues outside of normal working hours.
