Family Support Specialist

POSITION: Family Support Specialist

CLASSIFICATION: Full Time 40 hrs/week or Part time 20 Hrs/week

EXEMPT STATUS: Non Exempt/Hourly

REPORTS TO: Program Director

PAY RANGE: $20-23/DOE, plus Health benefits

SUMMARY:

Family Advocate provides direct service and support to families of children and youth with a wide range of behaviors that impact a child's education, health and mental health ages 3-22. Advocate assists families in navigating the mental health, educational and social service systems to access support for their child needs. Works collaboratively with service providers to ensure parents are involved in developing support plans for their child and assists professionals to better understand family needs and perspectives to improve service systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide one to one support to families regarding need of their child and family
  • Listen to families' concerns and assist them with problem solving and planning
  • Assist families to identify their child and family's strengths, needs and priorities
  • Create open dialogs and promote parent/professional partnerships
  • Attend meetings with parents and professionals, including IEP meetings, as appropriate
  • Refer families to local resources for support and training
  • Provide guidance through multiple systems of service, including mental health, education, government agencies and other service providers
  • Facilitate parent education classes for parents to enhance their advocacy skills and knowledge
  • Works in partnership with professional partners
  • Outreach to service providers to inform them of ParentsCAN services
  • Attend community meetings to provide the parent perspective, as assigned
  • Maintain up to date knowledge about educational and special educational laws and services
  • Other duties as assigned
EXPERIENCE NEEDED:
  • Lived experience with special needs/disabilities/mental health needs (Preferred)
  • Understanding of local resources and service systems, including Special Education, Regional Center and other Social Services and support
  • Have excellent skills in communication, organization, customer service
  • Basic computer skills: word processing, internet and e-mail; Microsoft programs
  • Ability to operate independently as well as a team player
