By joining the team as the Director of Commercial Underwriting, you will lead and oversee regional commercial underwriting teams, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy through strategic planning, risk selection, and compliance. Collaborate across departments to drive profitability, manage resources, and develop underwriting expertise, while mentoring and coaching leaders to achieve optimal outcomes.

How You'll Make an Impact

  • Lead the commercial underwriting teams in all regions (i.e., CRO, NERO, SERO, SWRO)
  • Develop short and long range operational and strategic plans and priorities to ensure consistency and alignment with overall corporate underwriting strategy holding team accountable, and achieving optimal outcomes
  • Advance Underwriting expertise through class-of-business tailored risk selection and coverage application across all lines-of-business
  • Define profit plans in collaboration with underwriting and regional leadership in order to meet profitability and pricing adequacy metrics
  • Responsible for technical file handling and compliance with state requirements and company procedures across the underwriting teams
  • Meet assigned budget targets
  • Develop/define agency engagement objectives to support growth and strong agency partnerships
  • Manage and balance resources within and across underwriting teams to meet service standards
  • Effectively work with leaders across the enterprise including underwriting, distribution, loss control, pricing, product, services, and claims
  • Train, develop, and mentor underwriting leaders
  • Effectively coach, develop and push the department toward success
  • Effectively evaluate performance of the department and individuals on the team
  • Assign appropriate projects to staff and monitor for execution
What You'll Bring
  • Master's degree in related field and 6 years of Commercial Lines Underwriting experience including 2 years of management experience
  • Bachelor's degree in related field and 8 years of Commercial Lines Underwriting experience including 2 years of management experience
  • Or 10 years of Commercial Lines Underwriting experience including 2 years of management experience
  • Strong leadership skills, including coaching, team-building, and conflict resolution
  • Advanced project management skills including time and risk management, resource prioritization, and project structuring
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills to effectively interact with key stakeholders and senior management throughout the organization
  • Advanced business acumen, technical knowledge, and extensive knowledge in applications and technologies
  • Strong multi-tasking and prioritization skills
  • Good understanding of Central Insurance's policies and processes
  • Ability to travel to Central offices as well as to agencies and events as required
Preferred
  • Successful completion of one or more professional designations such as CPCU, CIC, etc.
