General Summary:

As part of our comprehensive HR/Payroll department, the Payroll Specialist will serve initially as the Payroll Project Lead for the SPU Workday implementation then transitioning to an ongoing HR/Payroll role. The incumbent will define payroll standards, business requirements, assist in drafting payroll specifications, test configurations, and serve as a liaison between Payroll staff, users, and implementation team members. The Payroll Specialist will provide direction and support to Payroll, Human Resources, and accounting staff, develop and implement payroll processes and internal controls, and backfill payroll staff. Additionally, they will develop and deliver training materials and maintain payroll documentation. The Payroll Specialist exemplifies an ethic of excellent service to staff and students, ensuring the communication of important payroll information while maintaining confidentiality. Working collaboratively across the University, the Payroll Specialist works closely with Student Financial Services and Finance to achieve objectives. Job duties include: Define project standards, payroll business requirements, and assist in drafting payroll specifications to meet business needs. Manage all payroll-related processing activities efficiently by preparing or reviewing information (including analyzing/researching discrepancies) and inputting or reviewing payroll and benefit data to support payroll processing. This can also include new hire set up and maintaining out of state registrations if/as needed. Serve as the payroll system's subject matter expert, maintaining system configurations and conducting user acceptance tests. Implement and enforce internal controls for payroll processes, including SOC 2 internal controls. Provide excellent customer service, ensuring timely responses to staff and student inquiries. Stay updated on payroll laws, regulations, taxes, and garnishment orders, implementing necessary changes. Ensure accurate calculation and reporting of mandatory and voluntary withholdings and deductions. Oversee the outsourced payroll tax service provider (ADP) processes and relationship ensuring timely, complete, and accurate tax payments and filings, including compliance verification with state of Washington and out-of-state payroll tax regulations as necessary. Requirements: Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience. 3 to 6 years of applicable professional experience. Excellent attention to detail, precision, accuracy in the primary payroll functions, and ability to communicate effectively and empathetically with constituents. Collaborative spirit and high desire to be a team player. Preferred qualifications: Master's degree in business, HR, accounting, or related field. Experience working in a Workday HCM environment and/or experience with Banner (Ellucian) systems. Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) a plus. Experience working in higher education, a plus.
