JOB SUMMARY:The Safety Manager is responsible for administering Western States' safety program and plays in a critical role in supporting Western State's safety culture by positively interacting with employees, identifying potential safety hazards, and collaborating on safety solutions. This position leads incident investigations and root cause analysis, while collaborating with local leadership to effectively communicate lessons learned for injury prevention. This is a highly visible position with focused time within our facilities building strong relationships with employees and leaders by having open communication, sharing their expertise, while remaining open to collaborate safety solutions that enable employees to do their jobs safely, effectively, and efficiently.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Safety

  • Actively cares, promotes, manages, and advocates safety at Western States.As a team member in the organization, it is critical to ensure all employees, vendors, and clients have a safe work environment while adhering to all applicable safety policies, procedures and standards.
  • Ability to communicate the process for Job Hazard Analysis (JHA's) prior to any job-related tasks according to WSECO's policy and standards.
  • Maintains clean/clutter free personal work areas to ensure safe environment for all WSECO employees.
  • Ensuring safety boots, high vis vests, safety glasses, and all required PPE are secured for internal and external clients entering the yard.
Partnership and Collaboration
  • Collaborates with employees and leaders to identify safety concerns and potential hazards in the workplace. Recommends safety improvements and solutions to enhance workplace safety and injury prevention.
  • Builds positive relationships in facilities of responsibility by spending time becoming deeply familiar with workflow, the Western States business, the facilities, and the strategic direction of the safety program.
  • Support the Safety Squads in responsible region, attending monthly meetings, sharing safety strategy, coaching and educating the team on safety policies and providing guidance on injury prevention strategies.
  • Conducts data analysis to identify trends and provide pro-active solutions to slow and stop the injury trend.
  • Build relationships with area medical providers to ensure employees are provided the most efficient care at the right time.
  • Assists management to interpret and apply regulatory requirements and company policy. Provides leadership and guidance to ensure regulatory standards are being enforced.Ensures that quality control procedures are executed to monitor all aspects of regulations.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources on Workers Compensation cases, conducting the initial incident analysis and effectively communicating throughout the case to monitor adherence to accommodations and other compliance requirements.
  • Collaborates in industry and regional EHS activities to share knowledge, influence decision making, and promote WSECO brand; collaborates with peers to share knowledge and best practices across the organization.
Regulatory Requirements
  • Assists management to interpret and apply regulatory requirements and company policy. Provides leadership and guidance to ensure regulatory standards are being enforced.Ensures that quality control procedures are executed to monitor all aspects of regulations.
  • Keeps updated on new developments in EHS regulations and incorporates this information into the workplace assigned.
  • Conducts Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) site inspections and audits, action plans and follow-up visits to ensure compliance with EHS regulations and company policies in multi-location territory. Recommends corrective action where environmental, health and safety hazards exist.
  • Readily accessible and available to receive notifications of incidents while assisting leaders and employees on injury management.
  • Implements Company programs to achieve compliance, continuously improve performance, and meet customer requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, MSHA and applicable industry regulations.
  • Proven track record of building productive relationships with all levels of the workforce and influence safe work behaviors.
  • Works independently and manage priorities and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills with ability to present information to groups and respond to questions.
  • Successful experience as a team member sharing information, following process, and recommending improvements with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, employees, and leadership at all levels.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others to include customers, vendors, employees, governmental entities and the public.
  • Frequent overnight travel required to manage territory, approx. 70% travel. Occasional travel to other locations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Proof of high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety or related field of study with one-year experience in a comparable EHS program, or an equivalent combination of education or industry experience, required.
  • Minimum one year experience in heavy equipment or mining industries preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required.
  • Must be able to communicate (speak, read, comprehend, write in English).
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time along with walking, sitting, repetitive climbing stairs, reaching (including but not limited to above-shoulder reaching), repetitive bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, leaning and twisting.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures and environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. in accordance with Western States' Lifting Policy to include amount and approach.
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements for applicable safety policies.
