SMG is seeking an Environmental Coordinator - Utilities in the Northern Indiana/Northwestern Ohio region

The Environmental Coordinator Associate is responsible for coordinating the implementation of environmental compliance programs, permit requirements, corporate environmental policies, standards, procedures, and strategic environmental goals within their assigned region, plant, and project scope. The position will support Transmission, Workplace Service, and Generation projects in northwest Ohio, northern Indiana, Michigan, and potentially Illinois.

Overview of Job Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with implementing environmental permits, plans, regulatory, contractual, and policy requirements.
  • Attending meetings as requested.
  • Conducting location-specific environmental compliance oversight of Owner Work sites. Documenting and submitting findings to the Owner.
  • Assisting with research, documentation, education, etc., for environmental-related events or violations.
  • Performing environmental oversight across service areas with limited, if any, advance notice.
  • Performing project-related document reviews.
  • Presenting and communicating expectations and requirements associated with environmental permits, rules, and regulations to contractors performing work for the Owner.
  • Support the Owner's construction representatives for implementing environmental requirements associated with work.
  • Monitoring construction sites for environmental compliance throughout construction on all environmental programs until the environmental responsibilities with the work are met or are turned over to the Owner's responsible person(s).
  • If requested, participate and represent the Owner in agency inspections and communicate results to the Owner.
  • Monitoring and ensuring field markings and established buffer zones for wetlands and waterways, and other sensitive areas are maintained.
  • Providing support to the Owner's avian program specialist via site reconnaissance.
  • Monitoring compliance with incidental take permit as requested by the Owner.
  • Implementing Owner's Contractor Environmental Requirements Document and Standards as it applies to the Work.
  • Conducting site investigations (in coordination with the Owner) for scoping of sampling plans, permits, and studies.
  • Providing assistance with Environmental Site Investigations for property purchases, leases, and sales as requested by the Owner. In some cases, providing field support with Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments.
  • Perform pre-excavation assessments in stations and at T-Line tower locations where construction activities will occur, conducting sampling as agreed upon in the sampling plan with the Owner.
  • Arranging for used oil and electrical equipment disposal from stations as directed by the Owner.
  • Providing oversight and arranging for the disposal of contaminated soil, concrete, groundwater, and other special or hazardous wastes from construction or demolition sites. This includes characterizing the wastes, overseeing waste shipments, and ensuring that shipment documents are properly signed and returned promptly by the vendor.
  • Performing Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure surveys and inspections of new and existing facilities and submitting the necessary paperwork to the Owner.
  • Arranging for or conducting asbestos surveys as directed by the Owner. Arranging abatement and waste disposal, obtaining abatement and air monitoring quotes, submitting bids for Work Authorizations to the Project Manager, overseeing abatement activities, and coordinating notifications for asbestos abatement projects.
  • Overseeing the demolition of existing and newly acquired structures as directed. This work may involve obtaining quotes, preparing Work Authorizations, providing oversight, coordinating regulatory notifications, arranging for the collection and disposal of hazardous wastes, and closure of site wells and/or septic systems.
  • Assisting, as needed, in cleaning up and reporting spills that occur at construction sites.
Essential Job Functions & Tasks:
  1. Coordinate and implement environmental activities and policies in the assigned region(s) to ensure compliance with environmental permits, laws, regulations, company policies, standards, procedures, and strategic environmental goals. Assist and provide input on environmental policies and procedures. Communicate deviations appropriately.
  2. Provide training, instruction, and assistance to others on implementing environmental requirements and assist in developing environmental training materials.
  3. Provide support in the event of a release or discharge of a regulated substance, including making agency notifications, arranging contractor support, directing cleanup efforts if necessary, and completing follow-up reports with regulatory agencies.
  4. Promote and enforce (see something, say something, do something) safe work practices to safeguard employees, contractors, the general public, and facilities.
  5. Provide support during environmental compliance reviews, Phase I or II environmental site assessments, and remediation projects.
  6. Develop and maintain environmental documents and records in accordance with environmental content management standards.


Requirements
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in an environmental, science, or related discipline
  • Minimum of six years of environmental experience with an associate degree or four years of environmental experience with a bachelor's degree
  • Previous experience working around construction projects
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of environmental studies.
  • Travel is required, estimated at 80%
  • Possess planning and organization ability, problem-solving, excellent written and oral communication skills, and initiative.
The Environmental Coordinator should have a basic understanding of the following environmental programs:
  • NPDES General Construction Permits, along with NWP and individual 404/401 Permits
  • Construction Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans and sediment and erosion controls
  • Groundwater and drinking water protection
  • Wetland delineations
  • Rare, threatened, and endangered species habitats
  • Aboveground and underground storage tanks
  • Transportation of hazardous materials
  • Solid and hazardous waste management
  • Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures
  • Oil and chemical spill response and management
  • Air emissions monitoring, control, and reporting
  • Asbestos and PCB management
  • Pollution prevention
  • Environmental site assessments
  • Emergency planning and community right-to-know.
Physical Demands of the job may include:
