Key Responsibilities
As a Park Ranger, your role will encompass the following:
- Overseeing the recreational program, which includes both developed sites and dispersed recreation, as well as interpretive services. You will be responsible for the planning, operation, maintenance, and safeguarding of public use areas and facilities.
- Cultivating partnerships with community members, user groups, and various agencies to enhance program objectives and garner support. This includes leveraging partnerships to secure funding through challenge cost-share programs, grants, and other external resources.
- Formulating and assessing annual work plans for the implementation of recreation strategies, maintenance programs, and rehabilitation efforts for existing facilities, as well as planning modifications or expansions to established recreation areas.
- Identifying the type, volume, and location of work to be executed under each program, including capital investment projects and specialized recreation initiatives. You will evaluate and prioritize programs based on cost, staffing, equipment, and supply requirements. Additionally, you will supervise interpretive and environmental education initiatives and special recreation events, including volunteer and partnership programs.

- Occasional overnight travel may be necessary, and eligibility for a government charge card for travel purposes is required.
- Adherence to all application instructions is crucial; errors or omissions may impact your evaluation.
- Attendance at Contracting Officer Representative (COR) training and obtaining COR Level 1 Certification is required.
- A valid State Driver's License must be maintained throughout the appointment.
- Recreation shift schedules will require work on weekends and holidays from mid-May to the end of September.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the experience and/or educational requirements outlined below. Your resume must clearly reflect your relevant experience. If qualifying through education, unofficial transcripts must accompany your application.
Minimum Qualifications:
To be considered minimally qualified, you must demonstrate the required specialized experience and/or education relevant to the grade level for which you are applying.
Specialized Experience:
Applicants must possess one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, which includes:
- Coordinating, managing, or directing visitor services and interpretation programs.
- Providing leadership, guidance, and training to both paid and volunteer staff.
- Developing long-range program plans.
- Planning and executing special events, projects, or programs.
OR
Education:
Candidates must have three full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in fields directly related to natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, or sociology. Coursework in other relevant fields may be accepted if it provides the necessary knowledge and skills for successful job performance. Transcripts must be submitted.
OR
Combination:
A combination of education and experience as described above is acceptable. To combine education and experience, the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree beyond 36 semester hours is divided by 18, and the number of months of experience is divided by 12. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Transcripts must be submitted.
Status merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible.
Volunteer Experience:
Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service through National Service programs and other organizations. Volunteer work contributes to critical competencies, knowledge, and skills that translate directly to paid employment. All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be credited.
