The Packaging Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring products are packaged effectively, sustainable, and compliant with regulations to ensure safe and effective delivery. Primary Responsibilities: Work with 3rd party vendors to develop new packaging concepts based on operational need. Work closely with site operations to introduce new packaging into the sites and/or make changes to existing packaging (ex. Winter, Summer or padded bags). Work with the purchasing team to forecast and procure the appropriate amount of stock for each packaging type. Develop Transportation Management System (TMS) & Production Control System (PCS) requirements to support new pack outs and track progress to deployment. Monitor any future TMS & PCS deployments that could affect the pack out. Effectively communicate changes to all impacted internal and external partners (ie: vendors, compliance teams, operations, purchasing, system leads, etc.). Develop and update Job Aides / Work Instructions. Train sites on the appropriate pack out procedure. Perform cost benefit analysis including transportation costs. Attend Cold Chain Council Meetings. Forecast usage by site for material usage. Compile testing results for each box size and testing parameter for URAC. Perform live refrigerated package testing for URAC between regional geographies twice a year. Maintain and monitor live ambient temperature tests using Sense Aware devices. Compile, present and maintain package testing data for Cold Chain Counsel and PIC’s for regulatory discussions, i.e. Board of Pharmacy. Work with procurement on gel pack manufacturer purchasing and testing as not all gels are the same (individual sites sourcing / changing without valid testing in place). Share temp related resend data with vendors for analysis of lanes, temps and pack out types. Collaborate with Specialty, Infusion, Genoa and Home Delivery to ensure packaging is aligned specifically refrigerated packages. Dictate needed temperature profiles to test outside of the standard ISTA 7E Winter / Summer. Perform RFP’s in order to select new package providers. Various questions / concerns from all sites around packaging materials and testing results. Respond to internal RFP requests on all package related questions. You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in. Required Qualifications: 2+ years of experience with cold chain packaging. 2+ years of experience with URAC testing requirements for cold chain packaging. 2+ years of experience with live lane testing. Ability to multitask and manage projects. Ability to travel up to 30% for new implementations and audits. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in an Engineering related discipline. *All employees working remotely will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy.
