The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology is seeking an RN Clinical Coordinator at 90% effort to assist in the development and coordination of administrative and clinical services for patients with bleeding and clotting disorders as provided by the Iowa Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center (IHTC) and the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

Duties to include:

Provide Leadership and Oversight for Specialized Services or Populations

  • Provide a specialized level of clinical service for care coordination to patients with congenital and acquired bleeding disorders of all ages and clotting disorders.
  • Participate in and plan for weekly comprehensive clinics to provide coordination and education to patients and families. This includes pediatric and adult patients in their respective clinical areas.
  • Coordinate care for surgeries and procedures including preparing treatment plans, communicating with patient and family, ordering medications, coordinating with all involved disciplines (surgery, anesthesia, etc.), scheduling infusions as needed, obtaining prior authorizations. Manage and support telephone triage for patients, families, and health care team members.
  • Coordinate and facilitate patient care between multiple disciplines including home health agencies, schools, referring physicians and pharmacies.
  • Perform venipuncture for labs and/or infusion of treatment products.
  • Assist with discharge planning with bleeding disorder patients who are in-patient.
  • Coordinate and facilitate patient care between multiple disciplines including home health agencies, schools, referring physicians and pharmacies.
  • Assist with facilitating weekly nursing and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Assist with 1-2 Saturday outreach clinics annually for Amish patient population.
  • Attend local, regional, and national hemophilia meetings and conferences.
  • Attend national hemophilia training program for new IHTC nurses (i.e. Partners Program) as appropriate.
  • Assist with coordination of annual summer camp for children with bleeding disorders. This includes some daytime and overnight staffing.
  • Communicate effectively with team members including and not limited to: patients, caregivers, internal and external physicians, referral sources, schools, internal or external physical therapists, social work, internal and external pharmacists, internal pharmacy techs, insurance companies, and external nursing agencies.
  • Collaborate with our hemophilia specialty pharmacy to arrange factor treatment for surgery, inpatient and outpatient infusion, and home going supply. In collaboration with IHTC pharmacists, provide monthly review of patients ordering factor from our pharmacy as required by CMS guidelines.
Specialized Services for Nursing Care
  • Review National Hemophilia Federation [NHF]'s recommendations to improve care and collaborate with IHTC team to evaluate our practices.
  • With nursing colleagues, review and update standards of care and policies, participate in quality assurance activities to assure safe and effective delivery of care.
  • Monitor practices to ensure they comply with these standards and protocols.
Provide Education
  • Maintain up to date educational materials consistent with current evidence-based practice.
  • Present educational in-services to nursing staff, dental residents, school nurses, and other disciplines.
  • Serve as a clinical expert in bleeding and clotting disorders and provide disease specific education for patients and families.
  • Provide guidance to inpatient nursing staff, students, and residents when bleeding disorder patients are admitted including education on treatment and management of bleeding episodes and any specialized care needed.
  • Work with patients of bleeding disorders to consent for studies, obtain necessary data for grant proposals and progress reports including organizing and summarizing statistics.
  • Participate in quality improvement studies (either conducted through funding agency or conducted through institution).
Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Staff and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education

Following are few examples:
  • Monitor lab results for pediatric patients with bleeding/clotting disorders for medication management per established guidelines; communicates with physician for recommendations and then to patient/family, pharmacy, lab, and other healthcare providers.
  • Manage utilization of factor products, direction, and compliance of the clinical services to our IHTC patients who receive their treatment product from the UIHC Hemophilia Home Care Program in accordance with the policies and procedures of the UIHC, state professional standards, and all Health Care regulating entity requirements. This includes new referrals/intake and coordination of care.
  • Recommend, order, and administer factor replacement appropriate treatment products within established therapeutic protocols and guidelines from the patient's Hemophilia Treatment or Procedure Plan or Anticoagulation Plan.
  • Assure safe delivery of care for those with bleeding disorders in clinic and inpatient. Supervise correct care is given and protocols are followed for patients with bleeding disorders.

About the Division of Hematology/Oncology:

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at University of Iowa Children's Hospital is a pioneer in the care and treatment of childhood cancers and blood disorders. It is part of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), a national consortium of pediatric cancer centers. The COG is well known for its new and innovative ways of treating childhood cancer. The division has a long history of success in bringing hope to patients with programs such as our blood and bone marrow transplant, comprehensive sickle cell program, and comprehensive hemophilia center.

The mission of the division is to treat and cure children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases who live in Iowa by delivering personalized multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art care, through participation both in nationally and locally designed protocols.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience.
  • Registered Nurse with a current, valid Iowa RN license or eligible to become licensed in the state of Iowa. May be required to be licensed in surrounding states where UIHC HTC patients reside.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • General computer skills are required with proficiency in managing multiple databases including Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent attention to detail, problem solving, decision making and critical thinking skills.
Desirable Qualifications
  • One year of pediatric nursing and venipuncture/CVAD expertise
