**Background**: The Second Step (TSS) seeks to break the cycle of domestic violence, one family at a time, by providing services to individuals and families that enable them to remain free from abusive relationships and live successful lives. Those individuals and families who enter our program have successfully taken the first step away from domestic violence. TSS provides support and advocacy services to connect them with a broad range of services/referrals, including education and employment training, permanent housing search, mental health & addiction services, legal services, parenting support, and community advocacy support.

**Mission statement**: The Second Step is a community of survivors, advocates, and volunteers who foster the safety, stability, and well-being of those who have experienced domestic violence. We provide comprehensive services, including safety planning, legal advocacy, counseling, peer support, transitional housing, and other essential services to adults, youth, and children in Greater Boston and MetroWest.

**Reports to**:Chief Programs Officer

**This is a nonexempt position.
**Hours: 40 hours per week. **Work hours 9am to 5pm, some evenings or weekends when necessary. The Program Assistant is eligible to work a hybrid schedule. Work will be based out of TSS’s administrative office located in Newton, MA. Free parking is available onsite, and the office is within walking distance of public transportation.

**Essential Worker**:This position is considered an essential worker and may be required to report to work and/or perform duties during a declared state of emergency.

**Primary Objectives**:The Program Assistant is the first point of contact to survivors reaching out for services provided by the Steps to Justice Program and Prevention, Intervention, and Education Program at The Second Step. The Program Assistant plays a critical role as they both complete the initial intake process with survivors and help survivors fill out forms, collect documents necessary for litigation, and/or make appropriate referrals to external resources. The Program Assistant must provide compassionate, culturally-responsive, and trauma-informed assistance consistent with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

**Specific Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Client Support_
- Ensure culturally competent, inclusive, individually responsive service to domestic violence survivors, their supports, and other members of the community
- Provide referrals and resources to ensure survivors are connected to meaningful supports within the community
- Complete intake packets for internal referrals to the Steps to Justice and Prevention, Intervention, and Education Programs
- Assist clients with completing forms and requesting documents needed for litigation
- File court pleadings electronically and/or in person
- Conduct preliminary assessments of needs regarding safety, housing, legal, mental health and other supports
- Interview clients for purposes of completing basic intake forms in a trauma-informed and client-centered approach
- Provide short-term safety planning to clients in crisis - will have support from PIE team
- Refer out all intake callers/persons seeking TSS help to resources and outside supports
- Present all appropriate intake information to the PIE and STJ teams so that advocates and attorneys can communicate directly with clients and begin casework
- Program Administration_
- Maintain clear record keeping and documentation in accordance with agency, program, and funding requirements
- Maintain updated contact and intake information in client database
- Attend biweekly supervision meeting with Chief Programs Officer
- Attend all staff meetings and trainings
- Other TSS priorities as needed and directed by Chief Programs Officer, Chief Operations Officer, and/or Chief Executive Officer
- Office Reception_
- Answer telephones, monitor intake line, direct calls, greet and orient visitors and clients to the office
- Maintain a log of vendors and visitors in the office
- Complete a written intake form for each person seeking services, gathering basic and essential information, and entering information into database
- Provide intake updates and information to the appropriate program directors
- Keep strictly confidential the identifying information of any person seeking or receiving services through disciplined maintenance of information in locked/secured databases and filing cabinets.

**Qualifications**:
