ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a member of a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team, you use your creativity and engineering experience to find solutions to a variety of engineering problems. You participate in the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts and procedures within a manufacturing and product oriented development environment, and collaborate with outside sources in order to see concepts through to mass production.

As Senior Packaging Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and qualification of consumer electronic and consumable-goods product packaging within an FDA-regulated environment. Packaging Engineers need to have a strong understanding of the packaging development and manufacturing processes - from packaging design to reliability testing, through production line bring-up. You will interact and consult with a host of stakeholders as the subject matter expert, including Marketing, Product Design, Quality, Reliability, Supply Management and Manufacturing teams. You have a high degree of flexibility and ability to deal with ambiguity, and your skills and experience help you organize the work and clearly communicate the inputs required for success. Your success is defined in terms of the quality, effectiveness of documentation, and the timeliness of the pre-production builds and the start of mass production.

The candidate will be someone who can articulate and drive the considerations required to deliver the best overall design for the customer, distribution and manufacturing while operating within controlled procedures.

They will manage complex package development, leverage supplier resources and successfully push process and material limits to deliver practical, impactful results. This person will develop and improve the Packaging function of the business to meet changing complex logistical requirements, safely deliver product worldwide, and create positive customer experiences

Hybrid role in San Francisco office or Mountain View

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsive, cross-functional leadership of packaging development activities
  • Ownership and development of packaging structures at all levels
  • Scoping of new and sustaining engineering activities including resources, prototyping, validation and execution
  • Responsible for robust documentation creation for validation and release of packaging
  • Support quality systems around packaging acceptance criteria
  • Responsible for concept generation for future packaging designs
  • Interact with suppliers to develop packaging solutions from high-level design concepts
  • Work with Creative Team (or outside creative firms) on application of artwork and artwork revisions
  • Support packaging engineering investigations via vendor management, sampling builds and validation, internal golden sample coordination and sign-off
  • Oversee packaging testing at vendors or in-house laboratories
  • Some domestic and international travel to support packaging vendors and manufacturing builds, as required

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7+ years in consumer product or pharmaceutical/medical device packaging
  • 5+ years of project management experience
  • 5+ years of experience with SolidWorks and ASME standards
  • Software and tools: ArtiosCAD, TOPS/CAPE, AutoCAD, ZUND
  • Engineering Change Orders and GMP documentation practices
  • Experience with pharmaceutical packaging and labeling is a plus
  • Strong track record of shipping products in high-volume manufacturing
  • Experience working with offshore manufacturers
  • Standards: TAPPI, FEFCO, ASTM, ASME, GS1
  • Iterative design, prototyping, testing (internal and external), and validation
  • Materials: corrugated, paperboard, paper pulp, laminated films, and blister materials
  • Structural Design: pouches, blisters, cartons, cases, unitization
  • Manufacturing: Equipment, processing, automated and manual packaging

EDUCATION:

  • BA/BS degree in Packaging Engineering, related Engineering or Science field, or equivalent practical experience
