Chicago, United States RLD Foundation Full time

The Richard L. Duchossois Foundation

Director

Data Strategies & Insights

About The Foundation

The Richard L. Duchossois Foundation (RLDF) was founded in 2022 and launched formal operation in 2024. The Foundation is committed to addressing seemingly intractable social problems with imagination and passion. We strive to improve the lives of families and veterans, and to cultivate entrepreneurs through data driven and collaborative approaches to funding.

We seek to practice philanthropy with rigor and from a place of listening and strive to be a learning organization – to always seek greater understanding of our funding priorities. While our home and our priority is the Chicago region, we may consider national efforts that are aligned with our mission, values and goals.

Director, Data Strategies & Insights

The Richard L. Duchossois Foundation (RLDF) seeks a Director of Data Strategies & Insights who will be responsible for leading RLDF’s organizational data efforts to drive its mission. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and leader who possesses strong data strategy, management, and analysis skills. This position provides an opportunity to define a visionary data agenda that will influence decision making for RLDF’s philanthropy for the next decade.

The successful candidate will be excited about: designing an organizational data strategy which includes the collection of public and private data sets; complex data analysis as a means to inform decision making and continuous improvement; leading-edge philanthropy evaluation practices; and advancing social change related to our philanthropic focus areas. The Director is expected to collaborate with RLDF’s grantmaking team in a mutually supportive, ongoing two-way partnership.

The Director will set a proactive data agenda that fuels RLDF as a knowledge leader in the field of philanthropy. This agenda will allow RLDF to draw upon its data to elevate its own understanding, create dialogue on issues to advance funding change, and evolve practice in the field locally and nationally.

This Director will use a detail-oriented mindset to architect and implement a three-pronged data approach:

Data Insights

Lead the ongoing collection of relevant data and conduct analyses to inform organizational strategy in support of our giving operations.

By collecting and aggregating data on an ongoing basis that may include: evaluation data (our own and others’), publicly and privately held data relevant to RLDF’s issues of interest, leading research, nonprofit data, as well as outcomes data from national social-sector initiatives—our goal is to analyze and utilize these data as a means to:

  1. Inform and guide RLDF’s organizational strategy
  2. Drive RLDF’s targeted issue-based grantmaking
  3. Share with grantees to advance nonprofit best-practice
  4. Elevate sector and issue-based knowledge to increase community dialogue
  5. Open the door to potential peer-to-peer funder dialogue and partnerships
  6. Heighten sector-level and systems-change conversation and action among interested stakeholders
  7. Disseminate issue-based data briefs, white papers and relevant snapshots

Far more than just overseeing the gathering and reporting of data, this Director should come armed with a vision for how data leads to strategy and action. The Director is charged with ensuring RLDF builds its reputation as a data authority.

Measurement & Evaluation

Design and lead the implementation of leading-edge measurement and evaluation methodologies as part of a deeper commitment to strategic and outcome-oriented philanthropy. The Director will work with the Executive Director and program staff to establish what to measure, what kinds of performance and management systems to build, and how to align accountability accordingly. These measurement systems will be used to understand the impact of RLDF itself, as well as our investments in grantees, grantee outputs, and associated relevant social outcomes, if any.

Thought will be given to what changes RLDF seeks to produce as a foundation, the nature of the impact we seek to create, and how to measure both. With respect to grant and grantee measurement, the Director will be charged with developing a nimble evaluation practice that—on behalf of grantees—is strategy driven rather than compliance driven.

We seek a funding partnership with our grantees that recognizes the goals and outcomes which they can reasonably control or influence. We are committed to a mutual learning process for RLDF and our grantees. We seek a measurement and evaluation strategy that provides grantees the ability to establish thoughtful, clear, and ambitious performance goals for themselves rather than in response the demands of external forces, all with the goal to:

  1. Understand RLDF’s organizational impact
  2. Understand the impact of RLDF’s grants and grantees
  3. Adopt measurement and evaluation systems that give our grantees agency in shaping the terms of their metrics, while embracing accountability
  4. Create a learning eco-system to advance foundation and nonprofit best-practice

The Director will be responsible for the eventual hiring and management of a Data Analyst whose primary role is to support the organization’s data work and to play a support role in the Director’s overall data agenda.

Data Accelerator

Work with the Executive Director and Program Director team to conceive of, staff, and implement a pro-bono consulting practice, serving RLDF grantees on an opt-in basis, with the goal of building their organizational capacity to use data to:

  1. Elevate their mission driven strategy, learning & effectiveness
  2. Improve grantee organizational outcomes
  3. Drive change in grantee communities
  4. Foster peer-to-peer nonprofit best practice on issues important to Chicago

Successful Candidates: Experience and Skills

The Foundation is looking for candidates who are strategic thinkers with experience in data strategy, collection, analysis, and application. Preferred candidates should have experience building and maintaining functional databases, and implementing sound data governance practices.

Successful candidates are results driven, value data as means to an end, are highly collaborative, have excellent capacity for written and verbal communication, and can balance “analysis” with “doing.” They are problem solvers with exemplary judgement and thrive tackling complex problems.

We value individuals who approach the work with humility and curiosity.

Successful candidates will possess the ability to balance data science with strong data analysis, and possess the ability to think about complex real-world problems and how data informs strategies to address those problems.

Finally, RLDF places a high priority on maintaining high standards of personal integrity; values genuine partnership and alliance building both within the Foundation and with external partners and grantees; and believes in incorporating the principles of respect, equity, diversity and inclusion into the work of grantmaking.
