FLSA Status: Full-time / Non-Exempt
Compensation: $26.73 to $28.84 per hour
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:45 am-4:15 pm with occasional evening and weekend work
Location: This position is 100% in-person, located at 2650 Senter Road. Some presence may be required at our other location at 1560 Berger Drive.
Travel: Local travel may be required up to 80% of the time.

Position Summary:
The Field Site Supervisor implements the mission of the San Jose Conservation Corps and Charter School by using his/her leadership, supervisory and technical skills to develop the educational and work skills of young people enabling them to advance their own educational, personal, and career opportunities. The crew supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day tasks of the field project, and the supervision of a team of 4-12 at-risk youth ages 18-27 years old.

Job Duties:

General:
  • Transport crew to the job site with equipment trailer in tow
  • Work on projects that include some of the following trades: 
    • Landscaping and environmental services, 
    • Trail maintenance and new trail construction, 
    • Natural Resource Management projects including but not limited to: in-stream enhancement eradicating non-native plant species and fire fuel reduction
    • Roadside maintenance and safety
  • Communicate with the project sponsor, sub-contractor, or contractor
  • Organize, direct, and lead a crew of Corpsmembers to work efficiently to complete projects in the allotted timeframe, ensuring a high quality of work
  • Build an outstanding production team by developing and working with Corpsmembers to build and support a team environment
  • Determine manpower levels, material quantities, and equipment requirements for each project
  • Ensure that SJCC+CS policies are upheld and followed on the job site.
  • Collaborate with program staff
  • Demonstrate role model behaviors on ethics and integrity as well as positively promote company culture
  • Take appropriate safety precautions in the performance of job duties
  • Oversee maintenance of vehicles, keys, gas cards, and registration papers. Complete pre and post-trip inspection before and after the use of any company vehicle.

Corpsmember Development:
  • Be a mentor/role model to Corpsmembers while training them skills in different trades
  • Build a good rapport with each Corpsmember
  • Assist Corpsmembers in defining goals and creating a plan to reach those goals
  • Provide constant feedback on Corpsmembers performance including monthly evaluations
  • Consistently apply discipline and accountability as necessary
  • Train Corpsmembers in proper work ethic, attitude, and personal appearance
  • Develop, implement and monitor the Corpsmember education and training plan related to technical and personal skills needed to complete service assignments, including the required training in CPR/First Aid, communication, and conflict resolution

Administration:
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance rosters for Corpsmember payroll and project billing by using our internal project management system (the IQ system)
  • Evaluate all assigned Corpsmembers once a month using the evaluation guidelines
  • Fill out proper disciplinary action on Paycom as necessary
  • Complete and submit all tailgate meeting reports to the Projects Coordinator
  • Complete all vehicle inspections via Fleetio

Safety:
  • Conduct tailgate safety meetings on a daily basis
  • Conduct tailgate safety meetings, after all, work-related accidents
  • Keep written record of all safety meetings held and topics discussed
  • Assure that Corpsmembers wear proper safety gear at all times
  • Complete paperwork for every accident reported, assure that Corpsmembers work safely at all times
  • Communicate vehicle/work-related injuries to the Project Director
  • Identify common safety hazards
  • Read and understand product labels

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school Diploma or GED.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience leading young adults, OR;
    • Equivalent experience that demonstrates the ability to work in team-oriented settings and lead others.
  • 1 year in any of the following areas: trail maintenance and construction, invasive species treatment, hazardous fuels reduction, habitat restoration, litter pickup, creek work.
  • 1 year of work experience driving with passengers
  • Proficiency in using tools/safety equipment appropriate for various work projects.
  • The ability to solve problems in the field with minimal assistance.
  • Strong commitment to improving the quality of life for urban youth.
  • The ability to use, and teach others to use, power and hand tools safely.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and first aid/CPR.
  • The ability to maintain detailed records and documentation.
  • Customer Service Experience - able to identify and resolve customer concerns.
  • Computer literate.

Driving Record and Requirements: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates must submit a copy of their DMV driver’s record. The candidate also must possess and continue to maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license and a clean driving record.

Employment Eligibility: Federal law requires all employees to provide verification of their eligibility to work in the United States. Medical Verification: State law requires all employees working with youth to provide medical verification of negative tuberculosis test results within the last year. Employees will also be required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Background Check and Fingerprinting: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates will be required to undergo Live Scan Fingerprinting as well as a background check, which includes a state and federal criminal history record check.

Drug Screen: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates will be required to undergo and pass a 5-panel drug screen.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Adult Vocational teaching Credential - Landscaping.
  • Bi-lingual (English and any other language).
  • Supervisory experience in a non-profit on-the-job training program or conservation corps / Youth Build setting.
  • Class B driver license with Passenger endorsement.

Salary and Benefits:
  • Salary: $26.73-$28.94 per hour. Placement on the compensation scale is determined using a number of factors, including the candidate’s level of experience and education that either meets or significantly exceeds the minimum requirements.

Work Environment & Requirements:Position requires sitting, standing, balancing or walking on uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching overhead and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment, plus the ability to speak and to hear. The ability to lift, carry, push and pull tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required. The incumbent in this position works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. In the course of work the incumbent may be exposed to biologic or infectious agents, unpleasant odors, fumes, smoke, dust and air contaminants, and insects. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to use power, vibration, and noise-producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work near moving equipment, vehicles or machinery, work on ladders or scaffolding or at heights. The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing, equipment, or devices, and may work near hostile or offensive individuals. Equipment Used: The incumbent of this position will be utilizing various power tools, equipment, and Company vehicles. Vehicles include mainly passenger vans, and occasionally a pickup truck with a trailer or flat bed with the proper training.

**SJCC+CS IS A MANDATORY COVID-19 VACCINATION EMPLOYER**

All new hires will be required to provide proof of vaccination absent an approved medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. If a new hire is in the process of being vaccinated, their start date may be adjusted to a future date after they have been vaccinated.  Fully vaccinated means at it has been at least two weeks since the person has completed the entire recommended initial series of a COVID-19 vaccine.
