Job Title: Cartography Subject Matter Expert (SME)

Overview:

The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking experienced Cartography Subject Matter Experts to support a large-scale project focused on creating alt text and extended descriptions for a diverse portfolio of 960 maps. These maps include topographic maps, trail maps, historical maps, visitor guides, and more. The SME will be crucial in interpreting map content, mentoring a team of writers, and ensuring high-quality, accessible descriptions are produced for each map.


Key Responsibilities:

  • · Map Interpretation and Analysis: Provide expert analysis and interpretation of various types of maps within the NPS portfolio, ensuring that all visual information is accurately captured in alt text and extended descriptions.
  • · Outline Development: Create detailed outlines and summaries of map content to guide writers in producing accurate and effective alt text and extended descriptions.
  • · Mentorship and Training: Mentor and train a team of writers on best practices for writing alt text and extended descriptions, with a focus on conveying complex cartographic information clearly and accessibly.
  • · Quality Control: Conduct quality assurance reviews of alt text and extended descriptions, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and adherence to accessibility standards across all map types.
  • · Editing Support: Provide editing and feedback to writers to refine and improve content before final submission.
  • · Writing Contributions: Occasionally contribute to the writing of alt text and extended descriptions, especially for more complex or nuanced maps.
  • · Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, writers, and other stakeholders to ensure that project goals are met and that the descriptions align with the NPS’s mission of making all content accessible to the public.
  • · Documentation and Process Improvement: Develop and maintain documentation of processes and best practices for map interpretation and description writing. Continuously seek ways to improve the quality and efficiency of the work.
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • · Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Cartography, Geography, GIS, or a related field.
  • · Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in cartography, with a focus on diverse map types such as topographic, historical, trail, and visitor maps.
  • · Technical Skills: Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), and familiarity with map design principles. Experience with WCAG accessibility standards is highly desirable.
  • · Accessibility Knowledge: Strong understanding of accessibility requirements, particularly in creating content that meets WCAG standards.
  • · Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex cartographic concepts to non-experts and collaborate effectively with a diverse team.
  • · Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to ensure accuracy in all aspects of map interpretation and description writing.
  • · Project Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks, mentor a team, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • · Diverse Map Experience: Experience working with a wide range of map types, including but not limited to topographic, trail, historical, and thematic maps.
  • · Federal Government Experience: Previous experience working with or for federal agencies, particularly in the context of public service or national parks.
