Child Nutrition Programs and Policy Intern

The Food Research & Action Center (FRAC), a nonprofit public policy, research, and advocacy organization that works to end hunger in the U.S., is seeking an intern to work with FRAC’s child nutrition team, focusing primarily on the School Meals Programs and the afterschool and summer nutrition programs.
The intern will work with members of the child nutrition team to develop resources and communications targeted for a variety of stakeholders including state child nutrition agencies, anti-hunger and education advocates and school districts. Most of the work will be focused on expanding participation in the school and out-of-school time nutrition programs such as the School Meals Program, Summer Food Service Program, Afterschool Nutrition Programs and Summer-EBT.
This position will include significant exposure to policy making processes and interaction with leaders in the anti-hunger policy community.
Currently, FRAC employees are primarily working remotely. We anticipate that the intern will work remotely however, applicants in the DC area may have the option of working in the FRAC office if they choose
The duration of the internship is flexible, but applicants will be expected to meet a minimum three-month commitment and be able to work between 5 to 20 hours per week
Organizational Background
FRAC works to improve the nutrition, health, and well-being of people struggling against poverty-related hunger in the United States through advocacy, partnerships, and by advancing bold and equitable policy solutions. To attain this mission, FRAC engages in research, policy analysis and advocacy, coalition-building, outreach, technical assistance and training, and an array of communications strategies. In partnership with hundreds of national, state, and local nonprofit organizations, public agencies, corporations, schools, and labor organizations, FRAC addresses hunger and food insecurity, and poverty as their root cause.
FRAC’s child nutrition work is part of its Campaign to End Childhood Hunger, which focuses on increasing children’s access to the federal nutrition programs. The National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs play a crucial role in reducing childhood hunger and improving children’s health and educational achievement. This position will provide valuable experience working with key stakeholders and advocates to increase school meal participation by children from low-income households, with a special focus on encouraging schools to adopt in-classroom breakfast programs and states to pass free healthy school meals for all legislation.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Strong writing and research skills
- A collaborative approach to working in teams and willingness to help where needed.
- Experience and/or demonstrated interest in child nutrition, health, education, poverty and social justice,
- Commitment to working for social justice.
- Understanding of hunger and poverty and their impact upon communities, families, and individuals.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- Experience with data analysis
- Knowledge of the School Breakfast Program, National School Lunch Program, Summer EBT, and other government programs for children from low-income households a plus
- Experience working with schools, public agencies, and nonprofits
Potential Projects
- Assist with identifying and writing up best practices to increase access to the school and out-of-school time nutrition programs.
- Assist with development and update of resources for stakeholders to use in their state—newsletter articles, presentations, and fact sheets.
- Track and update database of national, state, and local school nutrition program expansion efforts, including state legislation.
- Contribute to the development of FRAC’s annual data reports.
- Assist in developing webinars and trainings on the school and out-of-school time child nutrition programs.
