The New York Public Library's Human Resources Department consists of a dynamic team of talented HR professionals who are collectively responsible for supporting the Library’s strategic priorities through quality human resources programs and initiatives that enhance the Library’s ability to attract, develop, manage, and retain a diverse, inclusive, and an exceptional workforce.  The Library’s staff consists of a mix of non-union and union staff, all of which are dedicated to ensuring the successful delivery of a robust suite of services to the public.
As the main HR interface with key internal stakeholders, HR Business Partners are responsible for delivering value-added consultative services to managers and their teams in the primary areas of:
  • Performance management guidance (coaching, counseling, disciplinary actions and employee development)
  • Policy and the union contract navigation
  • Workforce planning 
  • Conflict management and resolution
  • Organizational culture and employee experience
Some expectations for this role are that within:
Within 1 month, you will: 
  • Gain an understanding of NYPL’s structure and policies
  • Meet with and get to know the other areas of HR, how they intersect with your work, and how to partner with them productively
  • Meet key managers in the areas you support, and visit all of the locations.
  • Achieve a thorough understanding of the Employee Handbook, union contracts and other NYPL policies
Within 3 months, you will:
  • Learn “the business” of the departments that you support
  • Learn the strategies and goals of the departments and how to better support managers in achieving their goals and managing their challenges
  • Begin the process of becoming a trusted and resourceful HR Business Partner for managers and their teams
  • Understand key policies and processes of the HRBP team that support compliance efforts, performance management, and progressive discipline
  • In collaboration with your manager and HRBP colleagues, advise your clients on employee relations issues
Within 6 months and beyond, you will:
  • Independently advise internal clients on a variety of employee relations issues, including performance management, compensation, and departmental structures 
  • Proactively support your internal clients in achieving their team goals
  • Contribute to short and long-term HRBP team projects
Key Responsibilities
  • Provides day-to-day guidance and support to managers and their team on a variety of HR matters including, but not limited to performance management, progressive discipline, professional development, complaint investigations, departmental restructurings, ADA compliance and accommodation requests
  • Advises on the interpretation and administration of union contracts, policies and employment/labor laws
  • Consults with hiring managers and Talent Acquisition to determine appropriate staffing for business units, create business justifications, develop job descriptions and design recruitment strategies to on-board and retain an engaged workforce
  • Identifies training opportunities for various business units and partners with the Learning & Development team on the creation of the training programs
  • In partnership with the compensation team, analyzes new and existing roles to make sure salary recommendations are within pay equity laws as well as NYPL’s existing compensation structure
  • Synthesizes insights and observations from across the organization to identify improvement areas in HR processes and propose solutions for addressing them
  • You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at the Library’s discretion

Required Education, Experience & SkillsRequired Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s level degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3-5 years of professional Human Resources experience, preferably in a unionized environment
Required Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of a variety of human resources areas and experience managing processes and projects
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to build trusting relationships and interact with staff at all levels
  • Experience navigating the role of being an advisor to management and also an advocate for employees
  • Ability to negotiate complex and confidential situations with confidence and finesse
  • Effective consultation skills and the ability to influence others
  • Working knowledge of federal and state employment and labor laws and a commitment to staying abreast of additional and changing legislation
