POSITION SUMMARY

The Youth Support Specialist and Foster Parent Aide position is being combined temporarily. This position is a full-time, 40-hour position - including evenings and weekends.

Responsible for mentoring, planning, and implementing developmentally enriching activities with youth in the Therapeutic Foster Care Program. Cultivates and maintains a close, positive working relationship with all team members but particularly the professional foster parents, youth, and their identified family. The Youth Support Specialist is responsible for working with the overall program team to develop activity plans guided by youth preference and treatment goals and consistent with TCI and CARE practice model principles. Works with the Child and Family Team to ensure permanency options are fully explored and family recruitment is undertaken consistent with the youths' wishes.

Additionally, this position as the Foster Parent Aide is responsible for supporting the professional foster parents in the Therapeutic Foster Care Program. The Foster Parent Aide is responsible for working with the program team to implement a support plan for the professional foster parents, including respite and substitute foster parenting as needed.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Participates as a member of the Therapeutic Foster Care team; responsible for contributing to the cohesion and positive working relationships of the team in pursuit of the best interests of youth and families served by the program.

Works with youth and their Child and Family Team to help youth identify life goals and developmentally appropriate activities to help achieve goals. Develops mentoring and other activity plans with youth, foster parents, and other team members as recommended and approved in youths' Individualized Assessment and Treatment Plans. Also works with the CFT to develop Individual Crisis Management Plans and assist youth with managing acute behaviors consistent with those plans.

Works with foster parents and other team members to develop a foster parent support schedule, including regular periods of respite time for foster parents and provide "substitute" foster parenting for youth as planned.

Focuses on youths' acquisition of life skills and community involvements that assist with the development of independent living skills. Helps youth achieve their recreational, athletic, artistic, musical or other positive interests and hobbies.

Works with youth and prospective employers and volunteer organization supervisors to provide job coaching and on and off-worksite support as needed.

Documents services as determined medically necessary in accordance with Medicaid Rule 140 and HYFS hours of care expectations.

Provide support and respite, evening and weekends as assigned. Provides after-hour emergency coverage as assigned.

Participates in TCI and CARE training and TCI Refresher training and engages in reflective practice during supervisory sessions to ensure practice activities are consistent with TCI and CARE.

Participates as a member of Child and Family Teams, and participates in other staffings, meetings, and training as required.

Completes and maintains case recordings as required.

Exhausts all necessary resources to locate and meet with prospective family members or fictive fin for legal and relational permanency options. Engage them in the youth's treatment team to help youth towards achieving their goals.

Coordinates and facilitates visitations between youth and family or fictive kin. Supervises visits when required.

Provides after-hour emergency coverage as assigned.

Other duties as assigned.


SKILLS and ABILITIES

The ability to understand the issues of separation and loss, the effect of trauma on the child in care, and a commitment to a child's right to belong to a family;

The ability to provide service in a manner that reflects an appreciation for the cultural background, heritage, and identity of each child.

Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours.

Good oral and written communication skills.

Possess and maintain a valid driver's license

Possess and maintain proof of vehicle insurance.

Must be at least 21 years of age


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's Degree in social work or a related human service field, or High School diploma or GED, and 5 years of supervised clinical experience in mental health or human services are required.


CARE & TCI

One of the essential job functions of any position within the agency is to align your performance with our overarching philosophy of CARE. All decisions, actions, communication, and performance should align with the six CARE principles (Developmentally Focused, Family Involved, Relationship-Based, Ecologically Oriented, Competence Centered, and Trauma-Informed). Not only must you complete the CARE training with satisfactory participation, but you must then put that training into practice in your everyday work.

Every employee must also pass TCI training with a satisfactory grade in written and/or physical testing. All employees must remain current on refresher training that is provided monthly at all locations. You will be tested every 6 months on the physical portion, if applicable to your position. You will be tested annually on the written portion regardless of your position. If you are not current on your TCI refresher training every six months, you will be required to retake the full course. If you do not pass either test, you may be required to retake the full course. Not only must you complete the TCI training with satisfactory participation, but you must then put that training into practice in your everyday work.
