THE INTERNSHIP:

LA Family Housing is accepting MSW/MFT Interns for the 2024-2025 calendar year to work in our Outreach and Interim Housing Departments. Interns must be enrolled as an MSW and/or MFT student with participating universities. MSW/MFT Interns will learn to apply their academic training to field-based practice as they provide hands-on services and collaborate with various clinical teams throughout our agency.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Outreach, engage, assess, and assist with developing care plans and providing intensive field-based clinical services while learning of and implementing Housing First, Harm Reduction, and Trauma informed principals with families, children, and individuals experiencing homelessness
  • Learn and assist in conducting field-based risk, safety, and biopsychosocial assessments and identify participants basic needs including socio-emotional, mental health, physical health, education, employment, and empowerment needs.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with service providers including but not limited to, outside agencies, medical personnel, community therapists and psychiatrists, protective services, and funding programs to ensure that the services needed by participants are provided
  • Provides crisis intervention as needed, under direct supervision of a field preceptor and field instructor.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with collaborating staff and outside partnering and collaborating agencies
  • Engages community-based organizations and social service partners in Service Area 2 to assist in reaching program and participant goals
  • Provides appropriate advocate on participants’ behalf
  • Completes and submits documentation as required by school, LAFH contracts and performance standards
  • Provides field-based supportive services and support programs team by identifying participant basic needs including socio-emotional, mental health, physical health, education, employment, and empowerment needs.
  • Provides field-based supportive services with assigned LAFH program teams to individuals or families experiencing homelessness residing in the field, motels, emergency sites, or interim housing sites in Service Provider Area 2.
  • Continues professional growth by updating knowledge of current legislation, homeless services policies, and current legal/ethical social work practices
  • Explore and propose solutions to current challenges, barriers, and effective services.
  • Drive personal vehicle in and around Los Angeles County and drive agency vehicles to transport participants
  • Additional tasks, projects, and responsibilities as assigned by field instructor or preceptor

WHAT YOU'RE SKILLED AT:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Proficient in Microsoft Programs (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Able to perform electronic data entry
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Maintain and execute confidential information according to HIPPA standards
  • Ability to work with diverse population
  • Proficient in Microsoft Programs (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)

OTHER:

  • Maintain and execute confidential information according to HIPAA standards
  • Obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Ability to pass post offer Tuberculosis (TB) clearances
  • Comfortable working in a pet-friendly environment
  • Travel is a regular duty for this position and is required 15% of the time
  • Use of a personal vehicle to travel between worksites and other locations is required
  • Must have and maintain a valid California Driver’s License and auto insurance in good standing
  • Ability to work a 9/80 work schedule, if applicable

WHAT YOU'VE ACCOMPLISHED:

  • Currently in an accredited MSW / MFT program, with an active Board of Behavioral Sciences Intern Number

INTERNSHIP SCHEDULE

WORK SCHEDULE: Part-Time (16-20 hours)
