At Cocoon House we partner with young people, families, and communities in Snohomish County to break the cycle of homelessness through outreach, housing, and prevention. The Peer Specialist is self-identified as a person with prior lived experience being involved in a system of care and/or navigating family conflict and utilizes their lived experience in this role providing Family Reconciliation Services (FRS) in partnership with DCYF. The Peer Specialist is responsible for coordinating support for and amongst peers (i.e. support groups, pro-social activities, etc.) as well as providing individualized advocacy and support to youth and families when appropriate.

Peer Specialist Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Part-Time: Monday-Friday | On-site in Everett

Wages: $23-25/hr | +$1.50/hr pay differential for multi-lingual skills with additional paperwork

  • Providing social and emotional support to youth and families by sharing their own lived experiences navigating systems and resources
  • Sharing their own knowledge and awareness of community resources
  • Provide opportunities for youth and families to engage in their cultural traditions and practices to build resilience through cultural connections and relationships
  • Coordinating and hosting monthly activities for youth and families engaged in FRS including cultural, social, and recreation opportunities that promote bonding and relationship building between youth and their parents as well as other families accessing FRS
  • Engage in and conduct public awareness and education to communities regarding the needs of families in crisis to promote understanding and reduce stigma
  • Make mandated reports to CPS in accordance with RCW 26.44.030 when there is reason to believe the youth has suffered abuse and neglect.
  • Provide advocacy support as needed to youth and families navigating systems of care
  • Support other Cocoon House programs to increase staff knowledge around family engagement and Prevention work as needed.
  • Assist Director of Family Engagement in training Cocoon House staff in best practices in working with families.

  • This position can provide a flexible work schedule with some evening hours and at least one weekend each month.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma, or equivalent GED
  • Must self-identify as a person with prior lived experience being involved in a system of care and/or navigating family conflict
  • Previously demonstrated in-depth knowledge of adolescent development, family conflict and strength-based, solution focused approaches to family reconciliation
  • Previously demonstrated in-depth knowledge of child welfare, juvenile justice and the disproportionate impact of those systems on Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and LGBTQ+ youth and families
  • Previous experience working in and with diverse and historically underserved communities
  • Strong and effective communication skills; proficiency in crisis intervention/de-escalation.
  • Knowledge of street culture, adolescent development, and strengths-based approaches preferred.
  • Individuals with lived experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.


Conditions of Employment

  • Must be at least 21 years of age, unless the peer specialist works at all times with at least one staff person who is at least 21 years of age
  • Possess a valid Washington State driver’s license, insurance and reliable transportation.


Physical

  • Ability to effectively communicate with all internal and external clients
  • Be able to hear voices and alarms.
  • Ability to read and comprehend a variety of materials
  • Ability to operate phone, computer, and record information for files and logs
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 Ibs
  • Must have ability to run up and down indoor and outdoor stairwells in case of youth emergency.
