OVERVIEW:

The Earthworks Afterschool Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the comprehensive activity-based after school enrichment and academic assistance program. He/she monitors the oversight and administrative functions related to the program. The Earthworks Afterschool Program Coordinator duties include, direct supervision of the Learning Guides, and ensuring all aspects of the program (s) are in compliance with state and local requirements. This position is directly supervised by the Earthworks Program Manager


The Earthworks Afterschool Program will provide education and mentoring programs that teach invaluable life-skills and social responsibility, while at the same time building healthy, lasting bonds between land and community. Earthworks centers on community building, team-building and social-emotional health. Our program will link human health with stewardship, positive youth development with a sense of social responsibility, and education with community outreach.


The other components of the program include small group activities, individual sessions, parent engagement and recreational activities/field trips. Field trips and special events take place during out of school time and include fun and safe activities to enrich the students' school experiences.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Administers, coordinates and oversees program.
  • Supervises, guides and evaluates on-site program staff.
  • Develops and submits monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Provides a positive youth development philosophic perspective.
  • Structures and organizes meetings and work groups
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with youth, parents, school administrators, faculty, and collaborating agency partners.
  • Explores and develops innovative opportunities to expand agency's reach to the community in the form of service learning.

EMPLOYMENT GUIDELINES:

Candidates must possess:

  • An understanding of adventure based/experiential learning that uses outdoors and the wilderness as a learning environment;
  • A tenacious ability to "make things happen" for students/families;
  • Significant knowledge of youth and young adult serving systems and community resources, partnerships and collaborations including asset development and risk reduction and protective factors;
    • A collaborative approach to solving concerns, including good rapport with students and families;
    • Professionalism, with students, staff and community / community partners;
    • Initiative and flexibility, as this role will evolve to respond to student need;
    • Good organization, time management and documentation skills.
  • A positive youth attitude;
  • Ability to work independently, creatively and to prioritize tasks;
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with school personnel, collaborative partners, community resources and other program staff;
  • Sensitivity to, appreciation for and ability to work with a culturally diverse population;
  • Ability to be responsive and flexible;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree with preference given to those with coursework or applied practice in education and leadership.
  • Must have experience working in an urban school setting as well as experience working in K-8 classrooms (no certification required).
  • Must experience designing/ implementing hands-on activities for enhancing teambuilding and leadership skills.
  • Must be able to multi-task and coordinate with various stakeholders including, teachers, administrators and other Earthworks staff.
  • Must be personable, reliable, engaged and have an ability to work well with young, school-aged students in fluctuating environments.
