POSITION SUMMARY

United Way of South Central Michigan's (UWSCMI) small business programs support microbusinesses within the City of Kalamazoo through grantmaking and lending opportunities. UWSCMI invests, on average, $500,000 in grants to area businesses. In addition to grantmaking, UWSCMI also manages a lending portfolio of micro-businesses in Kalamazoo with a total of $2.5M invested since 2020. Small business investment is crucial to the advancement and support of individuals and families within our community. Wealth building and access to capital supports both community members and our broader economy.


As the Program Coordinator, you will provide support in the following areas: client and grantee relations, program management and administration, data management and reporting as it pertains to the small business program.


This is a temporary, part-time position starting at 22.5 hours but not exceeding 25 hours per week. This is a hybrid role based out of Kalamazoo, MI. The position is grant funded through March 2025, with opportunity to extend.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

    • Provide culturally competent and values aligned customer service to small business program clients and community partners.
  • Client and Grantee Relations
    • Works with applicants and current grantees and loan holders to ensure access to UWSCMI resources.
    • Builds relationships with clients.
  • Program Management and Administration
    • Manages elements of the small business programs, including: goals, outcomes, internal processes, and client support.
    • Provides administrative support to the small business cabinet, who is responsible for funding decisions in the loan and grant program. This includes scheduling, electronic communication, providing accurate reporting and application materials, attending cabinet meetings, and acting as a liaison between the applicant and cabinet.
  • Data Management and Reporting
    • Supports data collection and reporting requirements for the loan and grant funds.
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Advises UWSCMI staff on solving gaps and strengthening programs when necessary.
    • Partners with the marketing and communications team to build awareness of programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrates a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and ability to apply anti-oppressive and anti-racist principles in the workplace.
  • Prior experience in economic development, small business/entrepreneurial support, or experience as a small business owner/entrepreneur strongly desired and/or formal education such as an associate or bachelor's degree in public administration, social services, or business.
  • Demonstrates creativity in problem solving
  • Prior experience with data collection, performance evaluation and data research
  • Prior experience with grant management or lending preferred, but not required
  • Prior experience with meeting facilitation, teaching or public speaking
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows products including: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Adobe Pro
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information
  • Demonstrates superior project planning and project management skills
  • Demonstrates skills in designing work plans, timelines, and managing for results
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of community organizations and populations is also required

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Moderate level of stress caused by tight deadlines.
  • Occasional work outside of normal business hours.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Candidate must be able to work successfully in a remote environment with private office space and high-speed internet.

SALARY: All the roles within UWSCM have pay ranges that are commensurate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the successful candidate. The hourly rate for this position is $30.
