The Human Resources (HR) Manager is responsible for managing the administration of human resources programming within the electrical contracting business, including onboarding, performance management, and employee relations of the non-union craft and professional workforce. This crucial role will ensure business unit programming is highly effective, in alignment with corporate programming initiatives, and in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. The Human Resources Manager reports to the Human Resources Director and may supervise human resources professionals. 


This position will be based out of the Des Moines, IA office with the opportunity to work a hybrid schedule following 30 days of employment. Construction project site visits will also be necessary, both local and in the near future, via flight (estimated 5-10%).


What You'll Do:

  • Aid in the creation and refinement of employment processes for this relatively new division
  • Manage employee relations issues by providing guidance and support to employees and management; ensure compliance with company policy, laws and regulations
  • Understand company compensation and benefits plan; analyze and propose recommendations based on market research
  • Stay abreast of federal, state and local employment laws and regulations in applicable geographic areas; review and provide guidance for new geographic areas
  • Align and prioritize business unit initiatives and strategies with the overall business strategy, workforce planning and corporate human resources initiatives
  • Partner with business unit leadership to develop internal talent pipeline (craft and professional workforce); advise, coach, and train employees on identified development areas; collaborate with learning and development department as needed
  • Prepare, monitor, and analyze business unit metrics; identify and propose enhancements and implementation plan for approval
  • Foster a positive work environment through employee engagement initiatives
  • Diagnose potential business unit risk; identify and propose solutions to implement corrective action plan
  • Partner with corporate HR team on companywide programming and processes; drive and ensure effective implementation at business unit level
  • Keep management informed on status of work, issues that may escalate, resource gaps and unmanaged risks


What We're Looking For: 

  • Education: 
    • Business-related bachelor's degree is required, HR focused emphasis is preferred
    • SHRM-CP certification is required, or the willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Experience: 
    • 10+ years of related experience in an HR role is required
    • 4 years of experience with compliance/laws and regulations adherence, employee relations, career path counseling, and hourly workforce management
    • Experience with large hourly workforce populations is strongly preferred
  • Skills:
    • Excellent leadership/supervisory abilities
    • Strong business acumen, tact, and relationship building skills across all levels of the organization
    • Detail-oriented and highly organized
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to make sound judgements and decisions
    • Analytical with the flexibility to successfully coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
    • Fluency in Spanish is a plus
  • Technology: 
    • Proficiency in basic computer software programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel
    • Ability to learn job-related software
