JOB OVERVIEW

Outside the United States, ACGME pursues its Mission through its department of ACGME Global Services and wholly owned subsidiary ACGME International.

ACGME-I is a not-for-profit organization that is independent of the ACGME, having its own Board of Directors, governance, and budget. ACGME-I, however, coordinates and collaborates on certain activities and strategic planning with ACGME Global Services, the arm of the ACGME that is focused on international graduate medical education (GME). Over the years ahead, it is anticipated that both ACGME-I and ACGME Global Services will continue to expand business. It is expected that the Vice President will participate in of developing strategic and business plans for both ACGME-I and ACGME Global Services and that this role will provide backup and support to the ACGME-I President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the President/CEO of ACGME-I.
  • Participate in developing ACGME-I strategy, budget, and other planning activities.
  • In coordination with the President/CEO, act as the physician face of the ACGME-I at meetings, conferences, and other professional events, both in and outside of the US.
  • Provide guidance and support in the ongoing accreditation process.
  • Provide guidance to international Sponsoring Institutions and GME programs on accreditation concepts.
  • Lead the ACGME-I staff on the development, revision, and implementation of administrative and operational policies and procedures in support of the accreditation process.
  • Work with ACGME-I staff members to foster improvements to the accreditation process, drive innovation, and promote research and collaborations.
  • Develop effective working relationships with members of the ACGME-I and ACGME Global Services staff, as well as with ACGME department chiefs and other relevant ACGME leaders.
  • Attend leadership and other key meetings at Chicago's ACGME/ACGME-I office.

As a key ACGME Global Services leadership team member, the Vice President will play a pivotal role in shaping the entity’s global influence. Responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in developing strategic plans to expand ACGME Global Services’ influence in global GME accreditation and identifying emerging trends.
  • Supporting business development by engaging potential international partners and creating educational materials on the benefits of accredited GME programs.
  • Promote and support GME to international organizations, ministries of health, and educational institutions, and present at global conferences and workshops.
  • Developing and delivering training sessions on GME accreditation processes and standards for international audiences and fostering relationships with relevant stakeholders.
  • Researching international GME accreditation standards and practices to keep ACGME Global Services at the forefront of the field.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff member(s). Supervisory functions include: making hiring and termination decisions; prioritizing assignments and directing work; developing and overseeing employee work schedules and approving time away from work; provides and/or facilitating employee training and development; approving/processing employee concerns and problems and counseling or disciplining as appropriate; completing employee performance appraisals; determining or making recommendations regarding new hire salaries and salary changes; and acting as the liaison between employees and management.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

  • 10 years of leadership experience in medical education and administration, including experience in GME accreditation.
  • Must be a physician with a demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning (for example, through maintenance of specialty certification).
  • Experience in the administration of medical education programs.
  • Experience with reviewing GME programs for accreditation at some level; participation with the ACGME/ACGME-I on a Review Committee or a previous role as a designated institutional official would be ideal.
  • Significant experience at some level in international health care delivery and education.
  • Established reputation as a respected physician and academic medical leader in the US and internationally, embodying quality and excellence.
  • Strong international stature as an educator.
  • Record of successfully leading change within organizations.
  • Experience in successfully launching and growing a new program, institute, or business.
  • Experience with management, including setting budgets, goals, and performance metrics.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage effectively through collaboration with other departments and organizations versus requiring hierarchical control.
  • Strong relationship builder.
  • A “servant leader” with the ability to flexibly apply different situational leadership styles as needed.

Preferred

  • American Board of Medical Specialties Member Board certification.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS

  • This position is based in a typical office environment with no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands.
  • Most of the work performed is normally done in the ACGME office and/or a home office with the typical physical demands of an office environment.
  • The Vice President, ACGME International will have significant international travel, and should also expect to maintain some type of residence in the US.
