Position Overview:

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for carrying out the safety programs and protocols established by the Safety Manager as directed. They are also responsible for training employees on these safety protocols and enforcing them if them are not being followed properly. Furthermore, the Safety Coordinator will work closely with the Safety Manager to ensure that the Company complies with all Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), federal, and state regulations to create a safe working environment for our employees and to prevent the possibility of any workplace injuries/accidents.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following are general responsibilities associated with the position as directed:

• Teach managers, supervisors, and other leaders in the Company about safety standards. • Review and update existing Company safety policies and procedures, as instructed.

• Conduct risk assessments and safety walk-through inspections at assigned yards on a regular basis.

• Record/document findings from safety inspections, and work with General Managers/Facility Supervisors to ensure that all identified safety violations/risks are corrected in a timely fashion.

• Respond when workplace accidents happen. Conduct and document all accident investigations for all workplace injuries/accidents, determining ways to prevent similar accidents.

• Lead Safety Meetings/Trainings on a weekly basis at assigned yards.

• Lead Safety Meetings/Trainings on a weekly basis at assigned yards.

• Record keeping/documentation of completed safety training for all employees.

• Inspect and replace employees' Personal Protective Equipment as needed.

• Take inventory of all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other Safety supplies on a regular basis.

• Responsible for ordering all PPE and other safety supplies as needed.

• Take inventory of Torching and Welding tools/equipment on a regular basis.

• Ordering Torching and Welding tools/equipment as needed.

• Collect all damaged cutting torches and send them in for repairs as needed.

• Coordinate the on-site Hearing Conservation Testing at assigned yards.

• Record/document equipment operator certification training for all operators at assigned yards. Update and distribute Operator Certification cards to all operators who have successfully completed the training.

• Work with Safety Manager to create machine specific Lock Out - Tag Out (LOTO) procedures for equipment at assigned yards.

• Conduct hands-on LOTO training for employees working with specified equipment.

• Schedule and facilitate all hands-on fire extinguisher trainings annually.

• Manage 2-way radio inventory. Responsible for ordering 2-way radios and distributing radios for assigned yards as well as retrieving all broken or damaged radios and sending them in for repairs.

• Assist and provide direction/information to customers/visitors whenever they come to the yard office.

• Receiving/signing for mail and package deliveries.

• Occasionally must run parts/equipment to other SMI locations as needed.

Requirements:

Education and Experience: The minimum level of education and experience required to perform the job at a satisfactory level.

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• A college degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management, etc. is preferred.

• Experience working in the Safety field and managing others is preferred.

• Experience writing detailed reports, policies, and procedures is preferred.

• Experience in the metal scrap industry is strongly desired.

• Bilingual in English and Spanish is strongly desired.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The minimum level of knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job at a satisfactory level.

• Strong understanding of OSHA guidelines and other state and local safety regulations.

• Familiarity with the tools, machines, and equipment used in the industry.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
