About New York Junior Tennis & Learning

For over fifty years, New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJTL) has honored its founder Arthur Ashe’s legacy by celebrating the diversity of children, encouraging them to reach their highest potential through free tennis and academic programs. NYJTL is the largest provider of youth tennis and education programs in the nation, providing services in 100 unique sites across all five boroughs while reaching nearly 90,000 kids. In addition, NYJTL designed, funded (with NYC), built and operates the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning in the South Bronx. All NYJTL community tennis and after school programs are offered at no cost to its participants.

The mission of NYJTL is to develop the character of young people through tennis and education for a lifetime of success on and off the court. It believes life skills gained through tennis, academics, healthy living, and character development are a catalyst for long-term achievement.

Position Summary

The Chief Education Officer will lead the strategy, management, growth, and diversification of multi-faceted youth development programs. The Chief Education Officer will oversee ACES after-school programs, which include 30+ school-based sites, 450 staff and a budget of approximately $20 million. Reporting directly to the CEO, they will serve as a trusted adviser and thought partner to the senior leadership team, ensuring operational completion of key organizational objectives and priorities. This is an ideal opportunity for a proven leader who is committed to serving low-income communities and is passionate about building and strengthening programs for impact and scale.

Core Responsibilities

1. Program Management & Evaluation

  • Oversee the curricular content, design and execution of ACES afterschool programs
  • Lead efforts to develop and implement innovative educational curricula and instructional methodologies
  • Develop and implement strategies for measuring the academic impact of programs and for continuous improvement based on data analysis
  • Spearhead data collection and analysis; perform benchmarking and evaluation; create dashboards; and develop recommendations for strengthening ACES programs
  • Cultivate and strengthen positive relationships with administrators at current school partners, the DOE, DOH, DYCD, and other key program partners
  • Develop relationships with administrations of new schools that may be potential partners
  • Create and implement effective training plans and techniques aimed at augmenting program delivery and staff acumen
  • Monitor overall compliance with regulatory and agency oversight rules, regulations, standards and protocols
  • Provide supervision and quality control over the work output throughout ACES organizational structure, from senior leaders to part-time staff

2. Operations & Strategy

  • Participate in implementation of the organization's strategic plan
  • Collaborate with the Finance department to ensure the educational programs' budget aligns with program goals and funder expectations
  • Identify and respond to private and public funding opportunities to enrich and/or expand programs, with support from the Development department
  • Develop strategy for how contracts are accepted and build a more comprehensive long- term strategy on upcoming RFPs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • 10+ years’ progressive experience in program management, including managing multi- layered staffing structure
  • Broad familiarity with New York City and State afterschool program standards and requirements, and/or school-day programs
  • Knowledge of DYCD or NYC school contractual, budgetary, regulatory requirements a plus
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with experience managing staff, budgets, and operations
  • Experience with data analysis tools, measuring outcomes, and reporting
  • Technologically savvy and comfortable using social media and other online platforms
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/spoken communication skills
  • Commitment to community service and youth development; interest in tennis a big plus
  • Cultural competency, appreciation and sensitivity toward diverse students and families
