The Stephens Family YMCA serves over 4,500 family units (13,000+ members) in Champaign Illinois. Champaign is home to the University of Illinois, a thriving Big 10 University, with many wonderful opportunities for family, culture, recreation, and social engagement. Champaign is located about 2 hours from Chicago, Indianapolis and about 2.5 hours from St. Louis.


The primary function of the Group Exercise Coordinator is to provide leadership in both design and organization of an effective group exercise program. The Group Exercise Coordinator will provide training for new instructors, design class offerings, create schedules, evaluate fitness classes, and coordinate instructors in the event of substituting needs. The Group Exercise Coordinator must have a genuine interest in the development of fitness, but more importantly a genuine interest in people and their health/well-being.


This position is part-time with 30 hours per week with the opportunity to move to full-time hours with experience and qualifications.


Qualifications


This position requires the incumbent to possess:

  1. Knowledge and understanding of fitness principles and their application to the group setting.
  2. Group exercise certification and 1 year of group exercise teaching experience.
  3. Excellent human relations skills and a true love of helping people reach their fitness goals.
  4. CPR Certification required or must be obtained within 60 days of employment.
  5. The nature of the position requires intense physical effort such as setting up equipment, lifting, and continuous aerobic exercise.
  6. The Group Exercise Coordinator should be a good decision maker/problem solver in conjunction with established policy.


Essential Functions

  1. Responsible for training all new group exercise instructors in terms of class protocol, equipment availability, and YMCA policy.
  2. Responsible for communicating status of unproductive employees to Wellness Director.
  3. Responsible for evaluating group exercise instructors performance via evaluations every quarter or every 6 months.
  4. Responsible for launches of new group exercise classes and Les Mills programming.
  5. Responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of fitness classes.
  6. Responsible for promoting programs with the assistance of the Wellness Director.
  7. Responsible for enforcing written rules and procedures for program areas in accordance with the policies of the Stephens Family YMCA.
  8. Responsible for establishing relationships that will enable the YMCA to maintain or expand its services.
  9. Enter class numbers in cost/benefit analysis.
  10. Responsible for reporting broken equipment to Wellness Director.
  11. Responsible for organizing all instructor trainings and certifications with Wellness Director.
