We’re committed to creating meaningful impact in Colorado’s communities by providing equitable and affordable business financing for entrepreneurs who cannot access bank loans or other financial resources.


At CEF we see our community impact through job creation, wealth building for disadvantaged populations, and the growth and success of the businesses we fund. As a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), we offer loans, grants, and free business coaching to entrepreneurs to help them succeed.


Colorado small business owners and entrepreneurs seek aid from our organization in moving towards the major step of asking for financial loans that they have not been able to find from traditional resources such as banks.


The Business Navigation team provides coaching, tools, and resources to entrepreneurs to help them position their businesses for success, before and after the loan. This coaching may include assisting clients in the Southern Colorado region face to face with setting up financial documents such as cashflow or profit and loss statements, building their workforce, reviewing operations for increased profitability, and devising marketing strategies for a variety of business sectors. Business Navigators are provided with tools and templates to use with clients and are also encouraged to bring their unique set of skills and resources to their work.


The Lead Accounting Consultant role understands that the right accounting solution for a business is a mixture of generally accepted accounting principles and a plan addressing the business challenges of the moment. They can solve accounting problems for customers in a manner that balances the ideal with the practical. These problems will range from the mechanics of right accounting to deriving key indicators from accounting for effective management of businesses.

Requirements:

Primary Duties


Exercise independent judgment by offering business consulting advice to CEF borrowers on potential business decisions in the following areas:

  • Facilitating first-time setup of QuickBooks Online or other small business accounting systems
  • Advising borrowers on chart of accounts, differentiating based on business sector
  • Payroll setup consultation, including FICA withholding and payments, along with state and federal unemployment payments
  • State and local sales tax withholding and payments, differentiating based on business sector
  • Bank reconciliation
  • Daily, weekly, and monthly accounting procedures, tailored to the business sector
  • Diagnosing accounting systems gone wrong for lack of proper attention
  • Coaching and guiding owners or owner’s accountants in developing skills to rebuild accounting systems that are deficient in any area
  • Profit and loss statement, focusing on:

• Income growth trends

• Gross margin trends by product or service line

• Expense control

• Return on labor trends

  • Balance Sheet analysis including:

• Return on assets trends

• Debt to equity trends

  • Assisting customers in cash projection and budgeting
  • Articulating financial concepts/strategies to borrowers with varying levels of financial literacy and small business types
  • Daily/weekly collaboration with other Business Navigator Director, Business Navigators (BNs), Loan Officers (LOs), virtually and in-person
  • Ability to document work performed with borrowers within a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system

Secondary Duties

  • Working closely with partner organizations, providing educational workshops on accounting and financial management topics, for their small business
  • Executing requirements under a specific grant or initiative to support assigned communities
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Business Navigators

Education/Experience

  • Minimum six years’ experience working as a small business accountant, or accountant in another industry
  • Solid work history of understanding, articulating, and solving accounting problems for a variety of small business types
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting is required
  • Past or current CPA credentials are a plus

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Solid working knowledge of small business financial best practices along with Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP).
  • Deep knowledge and ability to setup QuickBooks online or a similar alternative such as Zero, FreshBooks, Zoho Books, Patriot, etc.
  • Ability to work with customer accounting systems remotely as well as in the customer’s office, with experience successfully coaching in both modes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Outstanding problem solving, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Sound judgement and flexibility to prioritize and manage multiple projects at any given time while keeping commitment to deadlines.
  • Ongoing focus on continual improvement and efficiencies to process.
  • Professional demeanor and willingness to cooperatively participate on a team in a small mission-based organization.
  • Superior project management and facilitation skills.
  • Strongly self-motivated and able to follow through in completing high-quality, detailed work with minimal supervision.
  • Capacity to prioritize multiple responsibilities to meet internal and external deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare clear, exact, well -organized recommendations and reports and to communicate verbally in an effective manner.
  • Strong leadership to lead staff colleagues with proper integrity and commitment to the Organization’s mission and communities it serves.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus, however not required.

Workspace/Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Ability to travel to main CEF offices for regular meetings and training events for staff
  • Internet services to ensure work responsibilities can be fully met (CEF provides basic equipment)
  • Fast paced environment with ability to adjust with shifting priorities as needed to meet the needs of our customer base
