The Student Success Advisor, a full-time, 12-month position, to provide specialized retention outreach and support services within the Center for Student Success.

The Student Success Advisor facilitates Carthage students' successful transition to the College and supports ongoing academic success and persistence through graduation. Center for Student Success staff work closely with other college personnel to holistically address the academic, personal, and social needs of students, with particular focus on supporting underrepresented/underserved student populations. Our focus is ensuring every student graduates.

The Center for Student Success uses a model of holistic advising. We support students using a data-informed, comprehensive approach which leverages the expertise, influence, and resources of campus partners to support student learning and remove barriers to students' success. This case management approach requires Student Success Advisors to build rapport quickly, to connect with campus partners, and to communicate effectively across stakeholder groups.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide high touch, developmental retention outreach and support to approximately 600-650 Carthage students. Establish an intentional relationship with students. Collaborate with faculty advisors and career specialists to facilitate students' smooth transition to these additional resources as they confirm their programs of study and explore personal and professional interests.
  • Provide case management to increase students' likelihood of academic and personal collegiate success. In consultation with Center staff, utilize alerts, probationary statuses, account holds, low mid-term grades, and other signifiers to identify and prioritize student retention concerns; facilitate successful interventions; coordinate communication with faculty and staff regarding alerts, and connect students with appropriate resources.
  • Prepare for and teach assigned sections of College Success Seminar for incoming students with the goal of supporting them through their transition and moving them toward responsibility for their own academic and collegiate goal achievement.
  • Coordinate designated special project areas. Establish timelines and roles, develop programming, evaluate effectiveness and make recommendations for future improvement. Projects may include Peer Coaches, First Generation Student Programming, Communications and Outreach, Orientation programming, etc. Actively participate in the implementation of other projects led by colleagues in the department.
  • Maintain timely and accurate recordkeeping of outreach and student meetings, College Success Seminar attendance, special project area data, and other data points for departmental reporting.
  • Support the Center staff in professional development. Assist with strategic planning including strategic internal and external partnerships, identification of supplemental resources, development opportunities for faculty and staff, and/or student advocacy as appropriate. Populations may include first-generation, international, military-affiliated, commuter, transfer students, or other.
  • Fulfill a variety of assigned administrative responsibilities to accomplish individual and departmental goals, as well as other administrative and operational duties as assigned. Some of these responsibilities may include serving students during drop-in hours, contributing to campus committees and learning communities, and assisting during staff vacancies.
  • Participate as a visible member of and positive contribution to the Carthage community, as well as a model of lifelong learning and development for Carthage students

Qualification Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in higher education leadership, counseling, or related field.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, students, and families.
  • Requires the ability to build rapport and utilize tact and proper judgment while providing academic, personal and social support to students, including an understanding of and ability to appropriately enforce the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and Title IX Amendment of 1972.
  • Requires the ability to use standard office equipment and technology, including a telephone, keyboard, and personal computer and tools such as Microsoft Office Suite and various Google applications.
  • A minimum of three months of experience in student success, retention programming or academic advising is preferred.
  • Experience working with underrepresented/underserved populations is preferred.
  • Experience with Workday, EAB Navigate, and Microsoft Excel are highly valued.
