Superintendent, Fleet Operations

Works under the supervision of the Deputy Director, Utilities Operations. The Superintendent, Fleet Operations is responsible for managing all aspects of planning, developing, and directing the fleet maintenance department’s business activities including the financial, physical, and human resources functions associated with the fleet maintenance operation to ensure that fleet assets are purchased, maintained, and disposed of properly.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Supervises, selects, develops, evaluates, and provides training as needed to Fleet Maintenance staff to ensure quality service to internal customers.
  • Schedules personnel to provide adequate staffing at all Fleet Maintenance service locations, including emergency service.
  • Manages Fleet Maintenance activities, including repairs and maintenance of automotive and heavy equipment and ensures; ensures services are executed promptly and accurately.
  • Prepares, analyzes, and monitors fleet reports to improve department overall efficiency.
  • Forecasts, allocates, and monitors the financial resources of the department.
  • Develops, recommends, implements, and interprets maintenance and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs administrative support functions such as reviewing credit card reports, payments and maintaining related records.
  • Reviews new and renews existing fleet parts and service contracts; acts as Point of Contact (POC) between Fleet Maintenance and Purchasing department and POC between Fleet Maintenance and vendors and Purchasing department.
  • Reviews bid proposals and makes recommendations to Purchasing department to approve vehicle and equipment purchases.
  • Provides recommendations concerning forecasting, allocating and monitoring the financial and physical resources of the section and manages Fleet Maintenance contracts.
  • Performs related work as required.

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS

  • This position may supervise employees such as Maintenance Operators I-V.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Six (6) years experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing automotive, trucks and heavy equipment; including three (3) years experience supervising personnel.

OR

  • Six years experience in developing, controlling, and administering maintenance/financial functions, contract administration or managing the operations of a large fleet maintenance facility; including three years experience supervising personnel.

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid Class "A" Commercial Texas Driver's license or obtained within twelve (12) months of hire date, preferred.
  • Earned certification of completion in automotive technology or related field from a technical school.
  • Experience as a shop supervisor/lead.
  • Experience scheduling, assigning and monitoring work, providing technical training to employees in fleet maintenance.
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and computerized maintenance management system software.

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record.
