JOB OVERVIEW:

The City of San Luis Obispo is seeking a Fleet Operations Manager in the Public Works Department.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

POSITION SUMMARY:
As the Fleet Operations Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the acquisition, preventive maintenance, repair, and operational efficiency of all City vehicles, heavy construction machinery, and specialized mobile equipment. This role includes managing the purchasing, licensing, and disposal processes for the City's fleet while supervising staff in troubleshooting and maintenance tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and implement strategies for maintaining an effective fleet of vehicles and equipment.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of skilled and semi-skilled staff, providing necessary training and guidance.
  • Coordinate work assignments to optimize staff and resource utilization.
  • Manage the vehicle and equipment replacement program to align with departmental needs and budgetary constraints.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and provide training related to vehicle maintenance and hazardous materials handling.
  • Maintain accurate records of fleet operations and prepare reports as required.
  • Act as the City's representative in various community and regulatory engagements.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants should possess a high school diploma and a minimum of five years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, including supervisory experience. Relevant certifications in fleet management are highly desirable. A valid California class C driver's license is required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge of vehicle maintenance principles, employee supervision practices, and applicable laws and regulations. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential for effectively managing fleet operations and ensuring high levels of service to internal and external customers.
