PURPOSE
OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to oversee the fleet division. The fleet manager shall oversee daily operations of the fleet division and lead fleet mechanic personnel.

Reports to the Chief of Fire.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
 
  • Coordinates daily work activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise.
 
  • Performs routine service, preventive maintenance, and tire repair/replacement of light/heavy equipment, vehicles, ambulance, fire engines, rescue vehicles, tractors, trailers, generators, mowers, or other automotive/mechanical machinery.
 
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, which may include pumping fuel into vehicles, checking/replacing fluid levels, draining/replacing oil, changing/replacing filters, lubricating mechanical parts, greasing equipment, replacing belts/hoses, checking/replacing batteries, replacing parts, flushing radiators, drive train, running gear components and rebuilds bodies.
 
  • Assists in performing mechanical repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance work; assists in inspecting, testing, and/or repairing engine components and systems, such as steering systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, drive train systems, engine cooling systems, fuel systems, charging systems, starting systems, inflatable restraint systems, heating/air conditioning systems, power windows, lighting systems, or horns.
 
  • Maintain all necessary equipment and ensure engines, ambulances, rescue vehicles, brush trucks, and other vehicles and equipment are properly tested per manufacturer recommendations and meet all required standards.
 
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, and testing vehicles and equipment, which may include a service truck, various standard/emergency vehicles, various trucks and heavy equipment, vehicle lift, tire changer, battery charger, hydraulic jack, air compressor, pressure washer, generator, diagnostic instruments, or mechanic tools.
 
  • Tests vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations.
 
  • Makes emergency service calls for disabled vehicles/equipment at work sites or on the road.
 
  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep tools/equipment in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning vehicles and equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
 
  • Maintains inventory of parts, tires, tools, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials; picks up/delivers materials as needed.
 
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports accidents and incidents.
 
  • Maintains vehicle/equipment service records, warranty records, or other documentation of work activities (by electronic means preferred).
 
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, work orders, mileage records, or other documents both electronic and paper.
 
  • Checks vehicles status (hours/mileage) at the beginning of each workday to verify their status on routine PM.
 
  • Schedules work assignments to fleet personnel at the beginning of each work day.
 
  • Schedules routine PM and repairs with the shift commanders to ensure a smooth transition of units.
 
  • Works with fleet personnel to minimize down time of units by making repairs as quickly as possible.
 
  • Ensures a service truck is available for fleet personnel to respond to calls for service or disabled vehicles.
 
  • Ensures all documentation is completed after each PM or repair (internal or external).
 
  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, receipts/packing slips, diagrams, service bulletins, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
 
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
 
  • Maintains an awareness of new procedures, trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
 
  • Must be able to express ideas and technical information clearly and concisely.
 
  • Must be able to establish and maintain the confidence of employees in the quality of repairs and maintenance of life-saving equipment.
 
  • Must be able to diagnose vehicle and equipment defects and to complete repairs in an efficient, effective manner.
 
  • Requires good computer skills.
 
  • Must be able to complete acetylene, arc and mig welds with proficiency.
 
  • Must have knowledge of Federal Ambulance Specifications and State of Tennessee Ambulance Rules and Regulations.
 
  • Ability to diagnoses and assess complex mechanical, hydraulic and electronic systems.
 
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees assigned to assist in repair work, department administrators, and representatives of equipment manufacturers.
 
  • Safety sensitive position subject to pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion and random drug screens
 
  • Performs tire repair/replacement on vehicles/equipment, which may include raising equipment via hydraulic jack, unbolting and removing tires/wheels, removing tires from rims, inspecting tire casings and inner tubes for defects, repairing/replacing damaged tires, patching holes/punctures in tires, mounting tires, rotating tires, balancing tires, or checking air pressure level of tires as needed.
 ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS 
  • Assists in operating heavy equipment as needed.
  • Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
  • Must be available for weekend or after hours "on call" response.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 
  • Must meet the requirements of the fleet mechanic job description.
  • At least eight (8) years previous experience and/or training involving diesel /gas automotive/mechanical maintenance, tire repair/replacement, and equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must have knowledge of federal Ambulance specifications and state of Tennessee Ambulance rules and regulations as it relates to ambulances and maintenance.
  • Must have knowledge of NFPA 1071 standards as it relates to maintenance and repair of Fire and Rescue equipment.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification is preferred.
 PROGRESSIVE REQUIREMENTS 
  • May be required to obtain ASE or EVT certification.
